old routemasters

Will it be better in Reading or Maidenhead? As in which will have the most buses?

For most of the day, Reading.

Cavalcade leaves Maidenhead 0910, arrives Reading 1000 onward.

Bus services Reading - Maidenhead (mainly double deckers) and Reading - Streatley (single deckers only) and (as far as I can gather) a shuttle Reading - Rivermead

the oldest bus at yesterday's thing (it wasn't carrying passengers, but is in full working order and did do the run from Maidenhead to Reading)

it was one of the buses used on the first day of the Maidenhead - Reading - Streatley service in 1915

Should have added - the original bus depot (fairly basic) and shop used as office in the above picture are still there (they stopped being used by buses in the 1920s when Thames Valley built a new depot.

Sunday 9 August - bus event in Bristol, involving the Avon Valley Railway. More here.

Open day at Camberwell Bus Garage on Sat 5 September - more info here

(That's the 1920s building on the south side of Camberwell New Road, not to be confused with the 1950s building on the north side)

Not sure about becoming a bus driver, but going through a bus wash...I'm off next weekend, so thanks for tip :)

Back in 1983 0r so - 50th Anniversary of London Transport they had an Open Day at Acton Works - where , if you had a driving licence , you could have a go on a RM. There in a flash - taling my 7 year old nephew to get some credibility. Got there bright and early - about no 2 in the driving list - nephew in bus - proper old school , blue badge Inspector in charge - so quick run over the controls in the cab and off I went. Pure pleasure - quite easy with light steering and instanter gear box. Did 2 circuits - good old Inspector gave me the certificate of achievement and an application form for a job. :D - great experience.

yes, 1983 was LT's 50th year. (although to be pedantic, Chiswick was the bus works, Acton was - and is? - the underground railway works - think it was a joint open day that year.)

At the North Weald rally, you didn't even need to have a driving licence, since it wasn't public highway.

The first motor vehicle I drove was

when it was in London Transport's training fleet and I was about 14...

Plans as yet a bit vague, but suggestion that there will be a one day operation of Routemasters and other aged buses on London route 159 on Wednesday 9 December to mark 10 years since the last day of regular service.

There will also be some Routemasters out on Sat 12 December on the 159, but this will be invited guests of bus owners rather than a public event.

Other coming events -

Ensign Bus annual vintage bus day (centred on Lakeside - services last year to Gravesend, Upminster, Brentwood) - Saurday 5 December (this uses buses that are fully 'PSV' licensed so not free)

small scale bus running day at Bromley (mainly single deckers on route 227) Sunday 13 December

This service is operated by heritage buses which are not wheelchair-accessible. TfL service 159 provides an accessible alternative.

A bit late - but here is the running timetable for the morning - (it did not come out well in copying and pasting) .....

alternatively, can be got as a PDF here

(or did you have a 'working timetable' showing what bus is doing what?)

Sorry - just back in from a German trip and trawling through e-mails - so threw it over quickly. Other domestics issues as well to deal with ! (good ones I have to say)

A mate of mine is driving a circuit - I only have his schedule ! - thanks for putting that out better. (Ed - please knock out my post there)

Today's event had passed me by, but there may be Routemasters around today on route 2, Golders Green - Crystal Palace (as it was in the 50s)

Today is the 60th anniversary of the first Routemaster (built in 1954) entering passenger service.

Although this is a run from end to end for vehicle owners and invited guests not the kind of thing that stops and lets people on and off...

a bit outside the M25, but a bus event in Taunton this Sunday (8 May) - 30+ buses (1940s to 1970s) on the road in and around Taunton, various other attractions as well.

on the London patch, advance info that there will be an open day event at Shepherds Bush bus garage on Saturday 21 May

a few events over the next few weeks -

Sat 14 May - small scale (6 buses or so) operation of late 1940s RTW type buses on old route 95, Southwark Bridge - Brixton - Tooting. Timetable (opens as PDF) here

(These were part of the generation of buses before Routemasters - not many of this exact type were built - at the time, the operation of 'wide' - i.e. 8 ft wide rather than 7 ft 6 - needed specific police approval for any route. This weekend marks 50 years since they last ran in service in London. Similar but 7 ft 6 wide buses continued in London service until 1979)

Sat 21 May - 'open day' event at Shepherds Bush bus garage. Can't find any info online yet.

Sat 21 May - bus day - includes chance to ride on buses - as part of the Faversham Transport Weekend (Sunday 22nd is more classic cars)

Sun 22 May - Country Bus Rally / running day at Sevenoaks. Organisers' website here although not much info yet.

This coming Saturday 9 July - Open Day event at Holloway Bus Garage - small admission charge for charity/ies

slightly more at Metroline website

Will include some ageing buses 'in service' for the day - including 1950s single deckers - this sort of thing -

220px-London_Transport_RF503.JPG

on route 210 (Finsbury Park - Hampstead Heath - Golders Green - more about that bit here

(note - they are definitely not 'easy access' - the engine is under the floor, so there's 3 fairly steep steps at the front and the entrance is not very user friendly...)

Tomorrow (Sunday 7 August) - bus running day things in Herne Bay and Oxted / Westerham

No web page for the Herne Bay thing and limited information for Oxted here.

Saturday 13 August - open day event at Bromley Bus Garage, Bromley Common - will include free heritage bus operation on route 227 (which will be 100 years old) from Crystal Palace and 61 from Bromley South and Orpington - more here

(Note that the 227 will mainly be 1950s single deckers which, having an under-floor engine and a fairly narrow doorway, were not designed with disabled person or push-chair access in mind)

a few coming events -

Saturday 8 / Sunday 9 October - not intended as an old bus event, but there's a huge amount of rail replacement services running this weekend, and I am led to understand that there will be Routemasters and older buses (1940s / 50s RT type) joining in on the Tower Hill - Barking District Line replacement service on one or both days. (More info to follow if I get any)

Sunday 9 October - end of season event at the Canvey Island transport museum - bit more here (to be honest this says more about the classic car display which is one part of it) but fairly well bussed - the Museum is a 1930s bus depot that became a home for retired buses in the 1970s. Photos from a past event here.

Saturday 15 October (and a bit closer to home for many) - open day event at Stockwell bus garage (a few minutes' walk from Stockwell Underground) - more here

Couple of events next weekend (10/11 December)

Saturday 10 - Routemaster Association run over route 159 to mark the anniversary of the last regular service on route 159. This is an owners and guests event, not buses running in public service, so they won't be calling at all stops. More here.

Buses will be leaving the Ace Cafe on the north circular from 1200 noon, and will be running the 1980s version of route 159 from West Hampstead to Thornton Heath and back - my guess is buses will be passing through the Brixton patch from about 1.30 pm until mid afternoon.

Sunday 11 - smallish event based on Bromley - about half a dozen 1950s single deckers on route 227 (Crystal Palace - Penge - Bromley), a 1950 RT and a 1960s Routemaster doing journeys on the Grove Park - Bromley - Petts Wood bit of (the old) route 94, and a 1980s minibus on route R7 from Petts Wood.

These will (subject to space being available on the bus) call at all stops on line of route and are free to travel on.

More here.

From past experience of this event, timekeeping is subject to congestion in Bromley town centre. Also be aware that the buses (in particular the 1950s RF single deckers) are not 'easy access' designs.

As an aside, I can't believe Victoria Coach Station hasn't been moved yet.

It takes an hour to actually get out of London from it as it's so poorly located for road access, terrible layout and over packed with no facilities, poor connections to the rest of the public transport network, fills the local small streets with coaches and on top of that on some pretty prime land.

I'd have thought that siting it on one of the big roads like the North Circular where they could build modern facilities would make sense. Tie it in with one of the Crossrail stations and you'd have something that makes much more sense to everyone.

The owners of the coach station want to redevelop it for housing, but the sticking point is finding an appropriate site for its replacement. You'd need a gigantic site to do it justice and London is already well built up around the major rail/tube stations. And you just know that local residents would kick up a stink about the impact on traffic.

Acton Cemetery would be pefect, if it wasn't for all those pesky graves. Right by the A40 and North Acton on Crossrail.
