No son of mine is becoming a massuese!

Hi.

My mother really doesn't want me to do a course as a massuese in America

She'd rather I want to go to university or something.

What's so bad about being a massuese?

isn't a male known as a masseur?

There's a difference?

Sorry, my view is it's not a transferable skill, if you decide five years down the line that you want to become a rocket scientist you're screwed. Of course if in five years you're still loving it then who cares?

Why do you have to do the course in America?

Anyway, getting qualified as a Masseur (or Massage therapist/sports therapist if you would like a more respectable sounding label for mum) only takes 9 months or so and that's doing it in the evenings/part-time. Doing this doesn't mean having to give up uni. If you don't want to go to uni then tell her that but don't use "it's my lifelong dream to massage" as the excuse. Do the massage course in your gap year or something. I've got a degree as well as being qualified in massage - no reason why you can't do the same.

Got more work and made more money from my massage qualification btw - never used my bit of paper from uni in my life. Despite what people say about it not being a transferable skill - that's bollocks. It might not transfer to an office or bank but it's ace to work for yourself and nice to have a skill you can take abroad if you want to work and travel. It's a handy thing to know how to do generally even if you don't have a career for life out of it (how many people do stay in the same career for life these days though?)

As you can see you will have to get used to an awful lot of innuendo from people who think they are the first ever to utter the hilarious line "do you do extras?". :)
