New President of the Philippines - Duterte the Punisher.

That prison is an utter disgrace. All of this posturing fuckwit's supposed "good works" don't count for shit at as long as conditions like that persist.

I have no problem with him eradicating the scourge of predatory vulture capitalism known as drug dealing by robust physical methods, no. I have no problem with him going after a corrupt elite, corrupt cops and corrupt generals up to their necks in it either . I'm also glad he's engaged in peace initiatives with both left wing and Muslim rebels and openly talking about amnesties for their prisoners . He's actually secured a ceasefire with the Islamist rebels , which is quite remarkable in this era of IS and increased radicalism . So he appears to be doing a lot of good stuff.

I'm also sure there's bad stuff about him too . But so far from what I can see the good far outweighs the bad .

Welcome to the third world more like . Who face a multitude of very extreme social problems without the developed worlds layers of social protection .

And from what I've read he does have a sense of compassion towards drug addicted people . He's been a strong supporter of rehab groups and stuff like that. What he's not prepared to tolerate though is the violent criminality that can accompany addiction . Which is understandable . Being murdered to fund someone's addiction isn't on at all.

He's rolling out this programme that he piloted in his home constituency across the entire Philippines . Even telling the army they'll have to give up some of their bases for it.

Mayor Duterte offers 2,000 pesos monthly allowance to the drug addicts who wants to change and rehabilitate

I don't think he built that prison . He's only been in power a few months .

How long would you say is a reasonable time frame for the President to improve conditions in prisons? And by that I don't mean giving them all eiderdowns and Xboxes, simply expanding the prisons so that the inmates aren't being packed in like cattle would be good enough for me.

Duterte encouraged and probably ran vigilante death squads to reduce drug dealing and petty crime in his city. That might sound like a good idea if you have been shut in a cupboard your whole life and have learned about the world through Batman comics.

In reality, the vigilante squads were made up mostly of former police officers, serving police officers, wannabe police officers, and the other assorted psychopaths that are drawn to this kind of endeavour. They killed a shitload of people - estimates run into the thousands - including drug dealers, suspected drug dealers, people who hung around with drug dealers, people who looked like drug dealers, people they wanted to settle scores with, and people who complained about the quality of vigilante death squad justice. That is how these things work, it is how it worked in Thailand, in El Salvador, in Davao City, and now in the whole of the Philippines thanks to the psychopath now running the country.

The "drug dealers" killed by Duterte's men and their like weren't arch-capitalists sitting in mansions counting their money, they tend to be addicted drug users very low down in the scheme of things who sell some drugs to pay for their own habits.

But of course you know all this already - you're not stupid and you wouldn't put up with a Duterte running your city.

Out of 1,424, there were 1,367 male and 57 female. This means that those murdered by the DDS were not only men, there were also fifty-seven women.

Looking at this according to age there were 132 children killed (17 and below)–126 boys and 6 girls. The youngest was a 12 years boy and a 15 year girl. There was a 9 year old boy who was killed by a stray bullet–he was not an intended target.

...

Thus, almost 50 percent of the victims were young people (children and young adults). Most the victims were killed in urban poor areas (e.g. Buhangin, Agdao, Bangkerohan, Boulevard, Matina, Toril). Most of those killed were involved in illegal drugs – as users and pushers. There were also those involved in petty crimes–theft, cell-phone snatching, gang members. There were 14 cases of mistaken identity–they were not the intended targets but the DDS hit men mistakenly hit the wrong target. There were some who had gone away after being warned that they were on the hit list and after some years, after reforming their lives, came back thinking that they were safe. Their names were still on the list so they were still killed.

...

Thus, one can say that majority of the victims of the DDS were young and poor–juvenile delinquents considered as the weeds of society. There were no reports of drug lords or big time criminals among those killed by the DDS. ... The victims of the DDS were unarmed. They did not fight back. Many were just sitting down on street-corners outside sari-sari stores, talking with friends and then suddenly shot in cold blood. There were some who were just released from prison and while waiting for public transportation on the side of the road were suddenly shot by motorcycling men. How the DDS knew the exact time and place they were to be released is amazing.

Another "scourge of predatory vulture capitalism" shot and left in the street with a cardboard sign reading "Pusher":

Olaires will bury her husband on Sunday. She concedes he was a drug user but says it is impossible he was a dealer because they were too poor and could barely pay for their next meal.

Siaron made money by riding a pedicab - a bicycle with a sidecar - and did odd jobs.

He even voted for Duterte in the May 9 election.

Other countries have tried to reduce crime by legalizing drugs instead of legalizing murder.

Latest victim is a 5-year-old girl killed by gunmen targeting her grandfather. He had gone to a police station a few days earlier after finding out his name had ended up on a drug watch list - the Duterte government has asked drug users to surrender at their local police stations. Cops take their names and details and send them home, and the lists are apparently being used as kill lists in many areas.

You're a first class idiot.

Ceasefire with the rebels? So explain the bomb in Davao yesterday that killed 14.

Meanwhile, a bomb kills 14 and Duterte declares a state of "lawlessness".

1900 are murdered extra-judicially, many in custody (this is what you support, prick) and you call this 'robust methods'. Have a fucking word with yourself. Or get on the same side as Obama and express your sympathy for those 14 deaths while ignoring the mass murder of innocent people. No lawlessness there.

You really are the limit.

Duterte should make the most of his trip to Laos because the way things are going at home, there could be an international warrant out for his arrest next time he leaves the country.

In the past, President Duterte has called Pope Francis the "son of a whore", US Secretary of State John Kerry "crazy" and recently referred to the US ambassador to the Philippines a "gay son of a whore".

He's a presidential Jim Davidson.

Does the Philippines have an equivalent of the tabloid press? When a picture of him beak-down in a pile of gak comes out I will chortle hard.

So you're the president of a country that has China on the doorstep nibbling away at your territory, the one thing that stops them is your country's close links to the USA. So you call Barak Obama's mum a whore. The guy's a fucking genius. Obama calls off meeting with Philippine leader after 'whore' jibe - BBC News

I think microanalysing his swear words is missing the bigger point though.

Swear words don't carry the same weight in Spanish as they do in English. Hideputa is 'son of a whore' but a mother will call her child that.

In the same way, we might say someone is a right bastard or a silly bugger but we are not referring to their lineage or their sexual preference.

What has Spanish got to do with anything, he was speaking in Tagalog?
