Netflix recommendations

I watched Queen Charlotte, the Bridgerton spin-off this week, and it was quite moving. There was a lot of artistic licence, but loosely based on King George and Queen Charlotte. It was quite interesting and moving, in its depiction of his mental illness.

very pleased scavernger's reign has been put on netflix. have been enjoying working through it slowly, and now I can download it for my very long bus trip. its a marooned-island-but-in-space kinda fair. the world building is beautiful and terrifying and the animation is weird but stunning. have to pace myself though through all the peril though.

It's one of those things that's not for everyone, but I can assure you that if it is your sort of thing you'll like it very, very much.

I've watched this series twice now and quite loved it, some of it was too cheesy for me but much of it very moving. Genuinely teared up at the scene where Brimsley danced on his own 😥

Yes, that was a moving scene, although I assumed the relationship was artistic licence rather than based on reality/contemporaneous accounts, but presumably such relationships did occur between staff, in secrecy, and it was sensitively and movingly portrayed.

The Place Beyond the Pines. Ryan Gosling shines in this but it's much more than just a vehicle for him. Good all round cast in this crime drama that avoids Hollywood cliches I'd recommend it

Godzilla Minus One is solid. Maybe not quite as deserving as the level of love it gets from kaiju enthusiasts, but definitely a solid, entertaining watch.

Edit to add: Also, done on a small (~$15M) budget with a 12 rating, which makes Who look a bit pathetic with what they're spending on the new one and their "for kids" excuses.

Triangle of sadness. Partly hilarious, partly well observed. Some will hate it
I liked it a lot.
Dramas about missing kids are not my first port of call, but starting the brand new miniseries Eric because it sounds unusual and anything but orthodox. About 3/5 aggregate ratings so far but sounds interesting enough. Also, Cumberbatch’s performance is said to be brilliant.
I watched the first episode. I didn't rate it at all.

Yes. I thought it was decent enough but the two twists devalued it's impact to some extent. . . . I liked that the characters re-evaluated the 'want / will to live' and dishonour of a failed kamikaze, but it was too obvious when Tachibana said "there is just one more thing". (I'm not sure how else it could have been done though). Noriko being alive in hospital was ridiculous though.

Watched 3 episodes of this at the weekend. Loving the animation and story even if it is all a bit wtf!!!

Apparently I can no longer watch Netflix on my Youview box unless I upgrade to the £10.99 package.

So does anyone know whether buying a Firestick is a solution?

I'm also debating cancelling for a bit.

If your TV has a usb socket, then yes, Firestick or Chromecast (I think that's what it's called?) should allow you to use your TV as if it's a Smart TV.

I think cancelling for a bit is a good idea - maybe if enough people do it, they'll have a rethink - it's a shoddy way to treat their customers. Ad supported service that you still have to pay for ffs.

Almost every channel on Sky, Virgin, other platforms have channels with ad-breaks that you have to pay for.

Doesn't make it right.
Roku have applied for a patent for a device that injects ads into the stream from any HDMI source. So you buy the TV from them then you keep paying for it after you've bought it. The whole world is trying to adopt this business model, because it earns them money for doing nothing, but it doesn't mean it's right or should be accepted.

It looks as though you can 'pause' for a month. So I could upgrade to the £10.99 plan so that I can watch on my TV, and then pause for a month every now and then so that they don't actually get their £132 a year.

Absolutely love it. Although I seem destined not to watch the lst 5 mins (my Internet has crashed).

Weird, beautiful. It's just great Sci fi. They've done a great job of creating a strange new world that still makes sense in itself. One of the best things I've watched for ages I think.

I sometimes struggle with animations because I require several methods of input even with subtitles - and you can't lip-read animated characters.
But I keep hearing good things about Scavenger's Reign, I might have to give it a go. I made it through Steins;Gate (which was very much worth it)

Yeah, I tried it a while ago and only watched one episode. At first the voices felt a bit weird, and the animation is quite, not basic but quite stylised. But once you get into it you don't notice and I think it adds to it. It looks a lot like Moebius to me, if you know him (I mean it isn't him but it reminds me of him).

I kind of want to watch it again from the start.

What's steins gate?

I saw some stills of Scavenger’s Reign and thought ‘nope!’ Too basic for me.
I give them a pass there, because the level of imagination on show makes up for it. Some of which would be expensive to animate in more detail. Not that I've ever not watched something because of the animation style. I still enjoy South Park.

I have an aesthetic aversion to Japanese anime styles and this looks similar
