More railways.. (model railway)

Wow. This guy makes mini graffiti for model railways!

I know that graffiti covered stock does exist, but IMO it is vandalism, often (usually) ugly and I know it costs ££££ to remove (also dangerous to apply,)
Even heritage railways suffer from this.
therefore I feel this sort of thing should be discouraged !

I sense you're actually serious about this? The model exists to reflect the real world, it doesn't create it

partly.
my point is that it "normalises" the presence of something I don't think should be acceptable.
but I know that railway modellers as a group are not the same group that consider spray painting the landscape as a fully acceptable form of self expression.

the people at the Severn Valley Railway were seriously fed up with the graffiti "artists" that decorated some of their carriages a couple of years ago. I donated to the appeal to pay towards the repairs of the carriages, which needed repainting.

I don't really care much about trains (or model ones), but I get much more joy from a graffiti'd one than one that has it's banal corporate branding all over it. It's just joyless corporate graffiti

Some joyless corporate graffiti, much improved by some spraypaint art.

If some joyless person of dubious parentage spray-painted one of the carriages that I have restored, I know I would be extremely annoyed.
It takes a very long time and much money. materials and expertise to do the job properly.
To have some stupid little turd do that would boil my piss, to say the least.

Put yourself in the position of a preserved railway volunteer who's put heart and soul into restoring old rolling stock, and then comes in one morning and finds someone's decided to spray their 'art' all over it. How would you feel?

I haven't been quite in that position, but I know the bods on the SVR. To say they were p1ssed off is the understatement of the millennium.
I know I would have to be restrained from committing GBH if I caught anyone spraying ...

Even if it’s an ordinary modern commuter train in company livery I’d rather not see them ‘improved’ with that shit. It ain’t fucking art, for the most part anyway- just a more elaborate and colourful version of a tag. They can go and fuck themselves.

I know the graffiti art vs vandalism argument is a subjective one with no clear answers- certainly to those of us who actually approve of and like some graffiti and describe it as art while condemning others as shite and vandalism. But for me there’s a clear red line in one respect anyway.

Anyone who simply graffitis their name, as opposed to attempting to create art or convey a meaningful message = cunt of the highest order. Regardless of whether they simply tagged it with a single colour can or spent hours creating a multicoloured elaborate effort.

Understandably so. Tagging is moronic and selfish at the best of times, but when it's all over something someone's worked on for the love of it then it's ten times worse.

Whilst it might be annoying on all your olde world Thomas the Tank trains, I think it makes the new stock look much brighter
No, it fucking doesn't.
tagging is an eyesore.
not only that, applying it is fucking dangerous.
It costs lots of money & time to clean that shite off, money that could be better spent on real improvements.
Add to that, in normal times the heritage railway movement are important financial gains into their areas.
(literally millions of £££s in normal years).

Did I argue that?

I just personally would prefer to see trains covered in tags by people known as "TOX20" or "NCF" or whoever rather than Virgin.

tagging (and litter and broken windows) are all things that make the general public feel less safe in the afflicted area.

Ah, so you're admitting that taggers are selfish pond-life who don't care what they're spraying their shite all over.
Not really I'm not that invested in what taggers do, just that it looks a bit more fun than your normal standard boring train

Let's wind this back to the start. Imagine you're a railway preservationist, you've spent untold time restoring an old coach to its best, and then you come in and find someone's tagged it. Are you going to be happy about that?

If not, why are you trying to defend the people who do it?
