Beautiful railway architecture

And Bennerly viaduct in Nottinghamshire, England's only other iron viaduct, finally now restored and recognised as a historic monument.

I found this while out on my bike one day and couldn't understand how it had got so dilapidated and forgotten. It now links the Nottingham Canal and Erewash Canal paths to complete a holy trinity of post-industrial cycling.

Meldon viaduct, Dartmoor. An extraordinary feat of engineering that never actually went anywhere. The train line only got another mile or so past this point then ended at Lydford, which is barely a place at all.

In another universe Brunel's coastal line never worked and this bridge now carries the only train line from the rest of the UK to Plymouth and Cornwall.

On a foggy night that could just be the bridge in The Lost Boys :)

Is Reading station a modern classic or too early to tell? The impressive fact is it was constructed over the existing victorian station while still in use, without interrupting timetables.

I think it's great, and as soon as I saw the picture I was about to say

An amazingly ambitious thing to do!

The train line went much further than Lydford. The Meldon viaduct was part of the London and South Western Railway main line route to Plymouth and carried huge amounts of traffic, particularly in WW2.

It's an amazing construction: but nothing compared to the mighty Crumlin viaduct!

i think they missed a commercial opportunity by not using the new bit as an artificial ski slope

:p

and there was certainly some interruption - i spent quite a few sundays in the bloody awful old bus station running rail replacement bus services about 10 years ago while it was happening, and there was a fair chunk of railway closed between xmas and new year at least one year - although arguably this may have been for track and signalling work as much as the station building

I caught an Amtrak from Seattle (a fairly busy station) and we had the same gorgeous wooden seats. Made to last and in wonderful condition.
