Misogynist barbarians in Alabama impose forced pregnancy law

The bottom line: they do this because they can, because they know they can get away with it.

And that's because the Democrats have always let them get away with everything else in the past.

In the past the Democrats in states like Alabama were the parry if segregation and the Klan. They were doing the stuff not letting others get away with it.

Not sure which thread this should go on, but this will do.

Most of the time, Justice Thomas just sits saying nothing, but wtf with this>

Justice Thomas launches an utterly bizarre attack on birth control

Justice Thomas’ has not hid his disdain for Roe v. Wade in his past opinions. What is surprising, however, is that Thomas devotes much of his concurring opinion in Box v. Planned Parenthood to an extended attack on early supporters of birth control. The implication is that contraception, and not just abortion, may need to be banned in order to prevent some kind of racial eugenics.

He goes into one on Margaret Sanger in this 20 page rant. Connecting abortion, birth control, eugenics and genocide of Black Americans is a favourite tactic of white supremacist anti-abortionists, bizarrely assuming Black people are stupid enough to fall for it (to be fair, clearly Clarence Thomas did, but there you go.)

Don't be surprised if there aren't more moves to curtail or ban contraception coming from states in the months to come.

Good piece on Sanger for those interested.

Whenever I think this story has hit 'peak depressing', someone serves up more. :(
When it started blowing up I was listening to a radio discussion where they were saying there were a couple of bills that were likely to be immediately quashed, and it was just a bit of a right wing tantrum after the mid-terms.

Seems like all sorts of blisters popping up in the wallpaper now, though.

It is depressing, ever more depressing.

I've long thought the GOP are playing a "long game," the goal being to create a one party, fundamentalist Christian theocracy. Ending legal abortion and restricting contraception are just two of the many strategies for achieving this (and submission and control of women is important for their vision.) I think it's much more than a tantrum after losing the US House of Representatives and some statehouses. It's a concerted strategy, working on the levers of power in all 3 branches and at all levels from county, through to state and national. The fact that "ordinary" Republicans (have not abandoned Trump and the party's leadership over their extremist policies pretty well tells me that they're just fine with it all, even if they are not the type to take to the streets with red hats on. The US is still in very big trouble. Hard to know if it can ever get out of it.

This is just completely messed up.

Alabama woman loses unborn child after getting shot, gets arrested; shooter goes free

Marshae Jones, a 27-year-old Birmingham woman, was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on a manslaughter charge. She was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Though Jones didn’t fire the shots that killed her unborn baby girl, authorities say she initiated the dispute that led to the gunfire. Police initially charged 23-year-old Ebony Jemison with manslaughter, but the charge against Jemison was dismissed after the grand jury failed to indict her.

...
Jones was taken from Fairfield to UAB Hospital. She was five months pregnant and was shot in the stomach. The unborn baby did not survive the shooting.

“The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’’ Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.”

Reid said the fight stemmed over the unborn baby’s father. The investigation showed, he said, that it was Jones who initiated and pressed the fight, which ultimately caused Jemison to defend herself and unfortunately caused the death of the baby.

"Let’s not lose sight that the unborn baby is the victim here,’’ Reid said. “She had no choice in being brought unnecessarily into a fight where she was relying on her mother for protection."

The 5-month fetus was "dependent on its mother to try to keep it from harm, and she shouldn’t seek out unnecessary physical altercations,” Reid added.

I'd dig up a link but it's Alabama...

Apparently there's a mega church in Alabamy that's getting the right to have it's own private police force

Church: Alabama governor signs private police force law

Legislation was signed a week ago.
Having private security for schools associated to the church is one thing, but giving them police powers...

A similar proposal was quashed a while back because this technically means giving governmental powers to a religious institution (separation of church and state yada yada...).

I think their use of powers would be confined to the church school and the seminary - it's worrying in itself, but it's the precedent that I find more worrying.
Of course, and doubtless they wil try and apply their standards only within their in-group. Problem is legally they will have to allow other faith groups the same privilege, because these people are fucking stupid

From what I saw, it wasn't terribly clear why they wanted police powers rather than just private security. I can see how it means you don't need to hassle the real police all the time when people need carting off, but I don't expect that's the whole story.

Is the idea on this new nonsense still to try and get this stuff to the supreme court so they can get rid of Roe v Wade?

Its probably to get people who think they can get rid of Roe vs Wade to give them money, in much the same way as THEY ARE COMING FOR YOUR GUNS works in the aftermath of almost every mass shooting does.

These people are so rich already it's untrue. I think it's more of a knocking every legal door until they find a gap project. They make my skin crawl even having to think about them.

More extremist nutters causing mayhem and murder for shitty ideology. Jihadi politics all over the place.
