Martial law declared in South Korea.

My daughter's been living and studying in Seoul for the last 3 years .....

She collared me earlier ..... "Is there anything on UK news about South Korea right now, as apparently we've got martial law and nobody near me knows fck all about it?" ..... this was around the time that the news was just breaking here

A couple of hours on and she's still asking what BBC and Sky are saying about it, even though its deep into the night there
I guess that's reassuring, somewhat...? I mean, that there's no noticeable crackdown. (Yet.)

I hope she's okay. x

I imagine as dawn breaks in Seoul there will be mass protests at the parliament. Their version of the tuc has called for an indefinite General strike until he resigns.
Don't their unions have a history of being pretty militant and aggro when it comes to street protests?

graun: "The Pentagon has said that the US and South Korean militaries are “in contact” but noted that there has been no request for assistance from Seoul amid the unfolding events."

Yeah, no fucking shit, there might be now he's backed down.

(as the graun also mentions, 'in contact' is er... a bit of a loose term given the us has 28,500 troops there)

Democracy hasn’t been about there for long. It’s inextricably linked to capitalism (which is most important).

I recollect the student riots there a fair few years back. Hordes of highly pissed off people. Petrol bombs ago go.

This a President unilaterally declaring martial law, potentially with the support of top military brass and literally no-one else, not some popular reaction to inequity.

Yes, only 190 out of, IIRC, 300 were in the chamber.

But considering the majority party, and the president's own opposition party, are against martial law being imposed, one assumes if all the MPs were there, they would all have voted against it.
You normally get a couple of wankers though.
