Middle-aged man, I want update image/clothing, where do I start?.

Just get some 501s. Other cuts come and go, 501s always look fine. Get them without any factory fading or wash though.

That's what I thought. But dropping two sizes in a year and changing shape has meant I've had to start again....

Bought a paired 501s the other day. They looked awful. Saggy arsed and badly fitting. Though other Levi cuts have been fine.

Diesel still tend to be okay on me as a general rule.

Weirdly the best fit I've ever found was a (now discontinued) Superdry model. *shrugs*

I can't cope with the disembodied crotches.

Good power stance in that last one though.

She looks like bambi on ice standing like that.

Wearing a pair of levis 401 jeans ,dark green. I bought in 1990  they are weekend jeans due to a tippex incident in 93  there is still some white drop marks on them  I think they are discontinued, I'd buy a few more pairs if I could find them .

I just struggle to find jeans that fit. I have short but muscular legs, as far as I can tell all the "cool" brands seem to think the only people who buy their offerings have skinny legs and/or no arse.

It seems I am also not a common size.

At least when I go to look for jeans to try on it seems:

1. I must be a common size because they have sold all of them and there are none left

or

2. I am a rare size because they don't make or stock many for me because "we" are so rare!

Have you investigated some of the denim wanker brands? I know you're opposed to the idea in principle, but if you're struggling elsewhere... a lot of the more fringe interest jeans are modeled on older styles, so are roomier.

I bought two medium faded jeans a year or two ago and they haven't lasted, one ripped quite easily and the other pair wore through on the thighs. Quite disappointed, I am sure jeans used to last longer.

Am about to buy some more but don't feel I know how to get a long lasting pair.

I remember when jeans brands used to advertise on TV, never see that anymore!

The fading on modern jeans is done by sloshing a load of chemicals on them, and it inevitably weakens the fabric - best to find a pair of unwashed jeans and fade them naturally by wearing them a lot IMO.

I'm all ears. I'd assume it's stuff like Bimble posted and other silly priced stuff?
Not like the stuff bimble posted - the true denim aficionado would never buy pre-distressed denim. Raw and unwashed selvedge denim is the baseline for all denim wankers - fading and distressing comes naturally with wear.

The accessible end of denim wankery includes brands like Levis Vintage Clothing & Lee 101 (the premium ranges for the mainline brands) & Edwin (although they also do a non-wanker range too, so careful). Then you start looking at the Japanese brands like Sugarcane, Samurai, Ironheart, Warehouse, Full Count and Kapital, or the American brands like Roy, White Horse, Rising Sun... Ralph Lauren's RRL range, Mr Freedom and NIgel Cabourne. You'll probably just look though, cause the prices are brutal.

That said, while they are expensive, £30 jeans are only possible because they're made in sweatshops in the far east to the lowest possible quality and standards. Most fashion jeans which cost 3-5 times that are made in the same sweatshops to slightly higher standards - whereas wanker jeans are (often) made by craftsmen in small workshops with high quality materials to very high standards. There is a big difference to the product.

I tired a couple that you recommended to me last time, fucked if I can remember which though. None fitted me - I like a slim fit, which seems impossible to get for my waist/thighs. I'm not large by any stretch of the imagination (32/34 waist) but my legs are short (29 inside leg) and relatively chunky.

At the moment the only brand I've found that fits the way I want is Topman of all places.

I have to say that since hitting my late 30s and thinking "my clothes are all shit I need to change", one of the principles I came up with was "no jeans". Jeans and a t-shirt is a stereotypical middle-aged tech worker uniform.

Oh! Try the Levis Commuter jeans Bees - slim fit, but made for cyclists so presumably accommodating of the larger thigh (my brother has proper cyclists legs and his fit just fine).

Levi's® Commuter™ 511™ Slim Fit Jeans
I'll give them a try next time I pass the Levi's store, but I'll be amazed if they fit, I've tried half the fucking shop in the past and they've all fallen under the "designed for people with no arse whatsoever" label.

There is a great trick with Levi's in that they will alter any pair for free at one of their stores. I bought some 501s on Amazon, 36 waist, ridiculously long leg. Nobody wanted them so I got them for 20 quid. Then took them to Levi's in Belfast who pinned them up then altered them to my size for free.

I've signed up to thread.com on the back of this discussion. I've been appointed Alice. I've bought a M&S short sleeve shirt in anticipation of the summer.
