Masterchef: The Professionals

I'll tell you who I don't want - the blonde Irish woman who stood in for Monica when she was taking a sabbatical with family issues. Something about her I found annoying. She may well be a contender, though.
Mrs SFM can’t stand her either.

Why do they need three of them anyway? There's only two on the amateur version I think
Originally it was just two, I think, with Monica coming in just for the skills section and cast as the scary head chef with her beady eyes on everything (she was Michel Roux's head chef at the time). She became a featured presenter a bit later.

I can see how a non-pro presenter alongside the pros helps as the non-pro acts as the viewer's representative, asking questions of the pros about what they are doing and why.

Yeah in the early Professional version you had to defeat Monica before you were allowed to take on Michel.

It needs a foodie to represent the average viewer. We need somebody who doesn't go this should react well with something to create whatever. We just need someone to say it tastes great.

The evolution of Monica has been interesting. At the start, they were all supposed to be scared of her, and probably were. Now she's the one who gives everyone a hug.

It's a tough balance. You don't want a top food critic like Nigel Slater or Jay Rayner, or a top chef. But a bit of a layman who knows a little bit about food but not too much. And they're gonna need to get someone quite the opposite of Wallace. They had the balance right there.

That posh bloke, Hugh Fearnley whateverington?

HFW would be wrong...what it needs is this or that or it should be organic or roadkill. Besides I'm sure he is quite contented down on his farm in Gloucestershire or wherever.

The winner is to work in the kitchen at Aven, here in Preston; I'll let you scroll over to see both the menu and the price

I very rarely eat out, and certainly not at prices like this, but is this sort of stuff normal? They come across as arseholes...

They're making 12 courses or whatever it is. They don't want people not turning up, cos that will cost them money, they don't want to be serving different courses at different times to different tables, cos that will be complicated and they don't want to change the tomatoes for peas cos Nina doesn't like tomatoes - cos that isn't the thing they're making and that will also make it really complicated. So it does sound a bit arsey but it makes sense tbh.

Maybe you're right, perhaps the cohort of people happy to pay £125 for lunch don't mind the arseyness?

The Sun's reporting this morning that Grace Dent has been signed to be the replacement on the amateur version.. hmm... dunno about that. Def won't work on the professionals.

A TV source said: “Grace is the perfect choice to replace Gregg on Masterchef.

"She’s knowledgeable about food and opinionated, plus it’s great to have a woman as a judge on the show. It will shake things up and give the series the boost it needs after such an upsetting and uncertain time.

Can't find an up to date GBBO thread. Do people not watch it? I don't.

However, I've just discovered this year's winner is the sister of the autistic twins my partner used to teach. They are so wrapped up in their own world(s) they didn't even mention it on social media lol. I only found out by mistake (they have an unusual surname for Wales).

I don't mind her occasional appearances as a critic judge, but a whole series full of her miserable demeanour I could do without. I only watch the professional one so hopefully they'll pick someone else for that. But, at the end of the day, we've seen the last of Egg Wallace so life's not so bad.

She's a middle class woman of a certain age so i assume that was the thinking. But I can't see her doing a series next to Marcus and Monica, no

I think Wallace performed his function well (minority opinion I know). So if they want that function maintained, the replacement needs to be a knowledgeable foodie layperson.

Alternatively I could see them ditching that function and just having the two chefs.

I was thinking of Ed Gamble, but I think he's currently a judge on the Great British Menu, unless I'm way out of date (haven't seen it, just heard him talking about it)

Hmm.... this guy's been proposed for the professional version.... on twitter i should add, not by anyone official. But I'd like to see it.

Just caught up. Delighted for Dan, whose backstory was so moving and who seemed like a very nice bloke as well as a fantastic and innovative chef. His pudding was a real gamble but it paid off!
Agree. They laid the story on thick for Dan so maybe they liked his whole story better but clearly he smashed it in the final as did George. Nice to see they all seemed to be mates. Really enjoyed the Turkish Irish restaurant too.

Yep agreed. He clearly knows his food and flavours and can express himself, while still being a relative layman. I quite like Chris Bavin off Best Home Cook who seems similar but perhaps he’s not deemed a big enough name. Grace Dent always seems a bit full of herself and doesn’t have the friendly ‘bedside manner’ imho.
