I know people always say that, and to a certain extent it's true, but I'm pretty sure they get scored far more than they get saved. 'cause it'd generally take far more nerve for a keeper to just stay standing in the middle of the goal than attempt a dive.

Either way, it remains a shitty way to take a penalty.

It's a 1 v 1 with the goalkeeper. Whichever way you put it in the back of the net it's a goal. Goals mean prizes. Its not stupid if it works.

Not at all. WC final 2006 when France got their pen Zidane would have known that Buffon would know his favourite penalty was whipping it into the goalkeeper's right despite his body shape indicating he'd go left. This meant Buffon would either dive right (which he did) or assume a bluff and go left, hence the perfect Panenka. What Buffon almost certainly would never have done is not dive at all.

We're talking ifs, butts and maybes of course.
