Living off the land 100%

i like the word forage, i shall use it more often - particularly given its new and rather wider meaning:

no Officer, i did not steal my neighbours underwear, i foraged them off a peice of string i found hanging over an allotment...

Did they not teach you how to live off the land in South Armagh? Though I suppose a sheep-based diet must have become quite tedious quite quickly.

Espinho doesn't offer much to sketch for cash. It does have free, indoor showers. I will make use of those before heading on for just a few KM's. It is very much a family resort for Portuguese people. Most people here speak English mind. It is more about beach activities rather than beach lounging. Volley ball, go-karts, skating ramps etc. Full of happy teenagers. I guess the parents are all in the casino.
To make some spare cash, you could challenge some local youth to a dance-off.

Also, €50 seems quite pricey for a cook set, especially from Decathlon. What did you get for that? I'm a gear snob and my set up of choice (pocket rocket and Optimus crux) probably only cost that.
My thoughts too. You could easily get yourself a decent set-up from Cotswald Camping for that, and they're not exactly known for being the best value retailer.

I would like to see the ensuing discussion between gnarled impoverished subsistence farmer with robust farm hound and a freewheeling devil may care unwashed tramp artist over the semantics of foraging some hard fought for tuber harvest. Film it Stan- you could flog it for inclusion in the forthcoming " dirty fucking hippies get what is coming to them" series on channel 5- narrated by Sean pertwee

the farmer will be like corporal jones, they don't like it up em, you know, the cold steel, no no those foragers don't like it up em, and stan capering in an ecstasy of terror as the farmer waves a sharp bit of agricultural whatchamacallit at him

Je regret, but I'm far too young (as well as witty and handsome..) to have plied my trade anywhere as cool, green and bucolic as County Armagh - all my adventures have been in places likely to surpass 48c in the shade, and usually there was no shade..

If you find yourself in the position of Lamb becoming tedious, ask your butcher for Hogget or Mutton - they have more flavour.

Inspired by Stan, I've had a brilliant entrepreneurial idea.

I'm going to find a local fruit farm that isn't staffed at weekends, and set myself up by the field entrance on a Saturday with a big sign advertising "Pick Your Own - £5 an hour, as much as you can pick!"

It's basically just foraging by proxy.

... and being nomadic!

This is something I have always wanted to try, and I am certain it is possible.

I am about to start walking north to south through Portugal. The only things I intend to spend money on are tobacco, booze and emergencies. I am taking work materials (pens and sketch pad) and a single change of clothes as essentials. I will also buy a fishing rod (and tackle), a pot of dried chilis, bag of limes (I never use salt - lime juice is a very good alternative) and a cooking pot.

I have my laptop with shitty webcam for photos for fun.

My plan is to harvest as I walk and fish for fish in the evening. I am going to try living off the land 100% for food as I travel :) I have fair knowledge for such a life but, expect (and, hope) to learn fucking shit loads as I go from local people who know best.

Camping out with no tent - proper vagabonding it :) :) :)

I shall update here whenever I find WiFi. Please ask questions as I travel. Good questions! Give advice also - I will surely need it. Anyone with good fish ID skills will be blessed forever.

I expect to find plenty of fruit and vegetables (cultivated and wild), and lots of herbs and stuffs.

Leaving tomorrow. I am so excited and full of trepidation. This is going to be a very fun thread people. I hope we all enjoy it.

Initially moving upstream along the river Douro, then heading towards the coast looking for a walking route known as 'Sendo Litoral', but totally open minded on paths and time.

:D

Back in my dad's day you would be called a tramp , given safe passage , possibly half a loaf and a night's kip in the barn with the animals. Oh and a wide berth because of the smell.
