Imagine if/when a policia come knocking:

"You've been caught stealing. What do you say?"
"I had to. I had been walking a long time, my food had run out and I had no means to feed myself. My legs are aching and I can't walk anymore. It was steal or starve."
"I see you do not deny it. That is to your credit. How far have you travelled?"
"12km"

thats a pretty poor representation of our favourite Bohemian Artisté - he's usually got a big map of Africa on the front of his trousers.

do we think the bottles are the detritus of consumption, or evidence of a crowd of angry locals upset at the pesting of the towns womenfolk and disgust at the stench of cock rot?

Here we go :)

On top of that, I have garlic, olive oil, small pot of chilies (all bought in Porto), and the sprig of thyme I found yesterday.

I am in the casino place. It is actually better than I was expecting, and does offer a bit of cash making potential. My legs are tired. Almost tripped over twice on the way here, so I may rest for the day.

But, first I am off to cook spicy potato and bean salad with mackerel in a grape and onion salsa. Basically, I am going to use a trusted recipe, but replacing tomatoes with grapes, because I don't have tomatoes.

The fish came my way in a small village called Granja. Fisherman was taking his catch to the shops, so I asked for a mackerel and held out a hand of coins. He took just €1 and then gutted and cleaned it for me :)

1: Shell the broad beans and dice a potato. Boil for as long as takes, drain and allow to cool.

2: Finely chop onion and garlic, fry with a little olive oil and crushed chili. Simmer with the grapes. Stuff fish with fresh picked coriander and lemon slices. Add a little water. Cover with lid and steam for 10 minutes.

3: Prepare salad whilst fish is steaming. Cover plate with fresh picked lettuce leaves. Sprinkle potatoes and beans. Add some slices of onion, a little garlic and a single, finely crushed chili. Squeeze the juice of a lime over the salad. Little coriander and drizzle with olive oil.

I need to find a sheltered spot to cook. Shall report back later.

TBF that does sound nice, (without the grapes.)

OK. Almost ready. Just need to buy a camping stove thing. I have also just bought a good quality knife and a Tupperware style box thing. Pretty sure I now have all I need, but there will be shops en-route.

Haven't decided which route to take yet, but the coast is looking favourite simply because it will be easy to see the weather coming in from the Atlantic. I have no waterproofs, so will rely on whatever shelter is available.

Other options include:
1. Walking 'backwards' along Camino de Santiago (Portuguese route) following yellow arrows in the wrong direction.
2. Camino de Fatima following blue arrows in the right direction.
3. Sendo Litoral - a coastal path.
4. Following the river Douro upstream and inland to the mountains.
5. Just do my own thing and see what happens.

Not buying a map. Just downloading stuff onto my laptop. This could be the last charge for Three days. About to hike to the top of a hill. Will choose a direction from there. Login here one more time before setting off and probably losing WiFi for a couple days, but I will record everything I 'harvest' and eat to post as and when I can.

Oh! Perhaps I should pick up a small bottle of olive oil now?
If I was still doing my tour I'd have loved to have met you along the way...instead I'll be wild camping somewhere on the South Downs.

Both blokes seem to be quite happy. Re.second picture, though, has Stan, even if travelling without a useful map, remembered to pack a Swiss knifey corkscrewy bottle opener Useful Thing? Never mind, I'm sure he has.

My brother is on holiday somewhere in Portugal with a bike and a flat tyre. Perhaps there should be a sort of "troublesome travels in Portugal" competition or festival.

Seriously delicious. I am now wondering why grapes are not used more in fish dishes. I didn't reduce the sauce much just to save gas. I think that happened to be a good move. It was sweet enough as it was, but brilliant with the lemon, lime and chili.

The broad beans were the best I have ever tasted - slightly peppery and full of flavour. All cooked to perfection for my own tastes. I am now very happy with my camping stove and pan/pot/utensil combo which cost less than €50 with the gas.

Washed down with a bought bottle of cider. I think I am going to allow eggs if I get them straight from the farm in return for erm... nothing.

strange how stolen food always tastes better

Espinho doesn't offer much to sketch for cash. It does have free, indoor showers. I will make use of those before heading on for just a few KM's. It is very much a family resort for Portuguese people. Most people here speak English mind. It is more about beach activities rather than beach lounging. Volley ball, go-karts, skating ramps etc. Full of happy teenagers. I guess the parents are all in the casino.

As I mentioned on the other thread. I used to pop to Espinho on the train whenever I needed a break from Porto. Don't recall the casino, just remember being able to walk along the beach through the waves and sit on the front having a chilled beer.

I liked the place.
