It is still out of season here. Just empty.

Done enough walking for the day. Not too far away from the casino resort place. Loads and loads of empty holiday places with good verandas to sleep in. Cheap rooms if needed, but I would imagine they smell damp and stale right now. The sky looks a bit cloudy. Something could be brewing.

I'm going to buy a couple of beers to take to the beach and talk to some fishing people.

Cooking tomorrow. Probably a fish dish with a bean and potato salad. Haven't seen any sea fennel growing here yet. Surprised and disappointed.
 
chooks are reknowned for their ability to sit quietly still whilst you walk up to butcher them. Go for a swan stan, but be careful.. they belong to to the queen of portugal and they can break a mans arm

Good morning.

I am about an hours hike from the casino place. My plan is to find fish there and hike inland to a small village with a castle called Santa Maria da Feira (about a 12KM hike). Once there I will prepare lunch with whatever I have, and probably camp for the night.

The whole point of this is to eat entirely from stuff growing on the land, or taken from the sea. However, I didn't expect to be able to do that immediately - I am not going to use shops (to steal, or buy) unless there is no alternative.

I have absolutely no problem with asking small allotment owners for a couple of vegetables. Neither do I have a problem with helping myself to stuff from commercial fields. If I come across a field of 40,000 corn on the cobs, I will take a few for myself :)

Anyone know, or interested in researching what I can do with seaweed, and how to spot when mussels are ready for harvest? I need to know this.

Seaweed can be used to forecast the weather. Just get a large bunch of seaweed, dry it out thoroughly, then stand out in the open & hold the seaweed at arms length for not less than one hour. If at the end of this time the seaweed is wet, the forecast is probably indicative of rain. :thumbs:

Yeh. You know there aren't that many allotments in the country, right,that they're an urban phenomenon?
 
make sure that when you fish, you go for nice sandy areas, there is a delicacy called the weever fish that the portugese rave about - it moves to the warmer shallows during the warmer months.

On top of that, I have garlic, olive oil, small pot of chilies (all bought in Porto), and the sprig of thyme I found yesterday.

I am in the casino place. It is actually better than I was expecting, and does offer a bit of cash making potential. My legs are tired. Almost tripped over twice on the way here, so I may rest for the day.

But, first I am off to cook spicy potato and bean salad with mackerel in a grape and onion salsa. Basically, I am going to use a trusted recipe, but replacing tomatoes with grapes, because I don't have tomatoes.

The fish came my way in a small village called Granja. Fisherman was taking his catch to the shops, so I asked for a mackerel and held out a hand of coins. He took just €1 and then gutted and cleaned it for me :)

1: Shell the broad beans and dice a potato. Boil for as long as takes, drain and allow to cool.

2: Finely chop onion and garlic, fry with a little olive oil and crushed chili. Simmer with the grapes. Stuff fish with fresh picked coriander and lemon slices. Add a little water. Cover with lid and steam for 10 minutes.

3: Prepare salad whilst fish is steaming. Cover plate with fresh picked lettuce leaves. Sprinkle potatoes and beans. Add some slices of onion, a little garlic and a single, finely crushed chili. Squeeze the juice of a lime over the salad. Little coriander and drizzle with olive oil.

I need to find a sheltered spot to cook. Shall report back later.
