Living off the land 100%

Or waterproof.
one reason stan might like to take a map is so he can see what rights of way there are. without such knowledge he's going to get into all sorts of bother and i suspect a lot of people in backwoods portugal would mete out instant justice for e.g. crop thieving, kipping in barns etc without the inconvenience of waiting for the police or courts.

I predict that within a week he'll get pissed in some bar, letch at some 18 yr old girl, be chased out of town, have some brilliant idea about becoming a millionaire by recycling shoes by using old tennis racquets for solar power and forget about his plan to hike to wherever.

Remember when he was going to walk through Africa? Or buy that house with a load of other people?

Was there a thing about living in the caves too. Which erked him when he realised they were full of hippies or something.
And Calafornia, something was definitely going to happen there.

Just to remind myself; my ultimate destination is a small town called Tavira. I need to buy a decent map tomorrow morning also. No compass.
Tavira is a lovely place , a little touristy July August but nevertheless relatively unspoilt. Nice beaches on the 'islands' and the 'Octopus capital' of Portugal , Santa Luzia, is nearby.

I fully intend to 'steal' crops. There is an old by-law here which states anyone can help themselves to any crops growing in the countryside if it is for personal consumption - a couple of onions etc is fine. Of course, not all farmers will respect this forgotten law. I also intend to steal eggs and chickens  I will not raid fields full of asparagus by night which is big business in Spain these days. Farmers are having to employ night security in some areas.

I know what to expect. I have walked from Granada to Santiago de Compostela before along the border with Spain. I will allow myself to accept any free food that comes my way, but not use food banks, or free kitchens/soup kitchens. I may have to go without beer at times :(

Pretty sure many of you will be very surprised by this thread. Even though I say it myself: I am a likeable guy, and very willing to work in return for meals. This may well come into play. I'm not just an artist - I am very capable, and adaptable. I'm lucky to still have good health and the life experience I have. I intend to show the easy way, and take on the challenge of the hard way. I collect my new boots tomorrow and break them in as I start. The first week could be painful.

I am communicating in Portuspanglish and hyperactive gesticulation :)

I promise many, many laughs!!!
You'll be neededing plenty of hyperactive gesticulation when some old smallholder comes out with his sons, dogs and a shotgun when you try and steal their chickens.

I like the implication that you might just forget where you're going when halfway through the journey - presumably because you've been hit on the head by a farmer defending his crops? :D

Please keep checking in when you can, Stan. I'm interested to know how you get on, having recently bought a backpack and having romantic notions of what it would be like to pack it all up and keep walking.

I have 'harvested' a big bunch of grapes :)

I haven't found a camping stove thingy. I am away from the city. Bars are cheap - €1 for a bottle of chilled beer. I think I need to hike for about another 2 hours, or so to reach my destination for day 1. Just 15 KM walked in total from the old FC Porto stadium/training ground this afternoon. There may well be WiFi when I arrive at destination 1, a place called Vista do Mar, or something. I'm just following the sun to the Atlantic coast.

Probably no cooking today, but I do have lots of grapes.

A big bunch of grapes?

It's small sprig of grapes, you need to find yourself a chicken, and you would be near to getting a decent meal then.

80c a bottle at my local , although it's a staggering 90c at my nearest bar.
