Living off the land 100%

I have reached Santa Maria da Feira. It is beautiful, but exceptionally quiet. I keep thinking it is June, not July. Everywhere (except Porto) seems far too quiet. There are a couple of very nice sketches to do here, so hopefully...

I have collected some wild mint and a herb with a very delicate leaf similar to very small parsley. Smells slightly citrus. No idea what it is.
Ah, that'd be "belladonna egregiousensis", well known for its capacity to induce antisocial behaviour and acute armpit odiferousness in sufferers.

It is so fucking posh here. I am beginning to feel all self-consciously scruffy and poor. It is you lots fault. I am the only person smoking rollies. Pretty sure I don't smell, but now I am wondering. Every bar is like designer glitz unless you go out to the football stadium.

They have a new football stadium. A new cinema/theatre. The town centre is all refurbished. It is designer village from hell.

And, yet - a half Litre of draught is just €2.60.

It seems to have funding for heavy tourism promotion and everything. A medieval fair is about to start. Tonight there are just very wealthy local people around. I suspect they don't want the tourists. They already have all the cash.

Hopefully things will change by day.
Hopefully.

I bought ten small ( six inches long ) fresh sardines for a euro today at our local market .had them with lemons from one of the trees in my garden, spuds , and a tomato, red onion and garlic salad from my veg patch .

Mackerel is well worth the extra pennies. Sardines are full of bones. I prefer tinned sardines. Anyway, surely Six Inch sardines are pilchards? Cheapest shit of all, but still good from a tin.

Btw everywhere in Portugal will seem quiet after OYE ESCUCHAME and general insane Spanish noise.

I suppose Lisboa is noisy and the traffic is bad in Porto (ok all cities - for some reason the Portuguese drive wayyy worse than the Spanish and much more aggressively) but I found it super chill when there in April. The Portuguese seem dead chill and sophisticated mostly. I couldn't get my peregrino pass cos they were busy being all religious and shit at the cathedral though and shooed me away.

I liked all the albergues and places to stay on the camino Portugues btw. You cook.your own food at most, they are very well equipped, it was great. No need for forraging if youve got some pasta and tins and fresh veg.

Give the red vinho verde a try btw. It is weirdly fiZzy and strange. Definitely a bit of an aquired taste! Rose and normal 'white' much fresher and more pleasant I think! You see a ton of grapes on the camino as alvarinho gives way to alvariño. There is def a difference though!

I want to forage and steal from the land and sea. That is the entire point of this thread. That is if this thread has any point of course.

On the coastal detour variant the caminho litoral you might have more luck with the fishing! Get a lightweight rod n you can get your tackle out whenever you want ;)

Edit - Damn I just realised youre heading south so this may not apply. Im sure there are still coastal routes tho. Get ready for crazy catholic tourist tatt in Fátima!!!

Check out the wines from Dão and Bairada as youre heading south, both from the Viseu area and towards Coimbra.

Yeh this will end in tears

Maybe we are being harsh.

Ok nicking chickens and eggs and stuff is pretty crazy but some fishing and forraging probs wont be that hard.

Also Im sure people will feed and booze a hungry peregrino like Stan heading towards Fátima on pilgramage (cough). ;)

I didn't realise you were also living off the land 100%

Urbanz are

btw Stan, do you know anything about Atlantjo? I fear that may be your biggest problem, even among the many others obvious ones. I did it in a car and it felt oppresive and lasted forever. There's fuck all there except cork trees, too. Though apprently cork is endangered/valuable these days, so if you can 'forage' some, you might find you can live like a king once/if you reach the Algarve.
