Linkedin - should I join?

Im on Linkedln, I get roughly one email a week from people asking to connect, these days I ignore them completely since when my current contract (finally) ends I will retire but they have been useful in the past for leads. It's free which is definitely a mark in its favour.

I will admit that LinkedIn has been a useful advert - there have been a couple of projects I've worked on with exposure/integration with industry, and while the initial contact was through the work, the 'background check' on LinkedIn, and the fact that in having a LinkedIn account I was saying I was interested, I got a couple of good offers.

Obviously, it's full of complete wankers telling the most outrageous lies.

Red trousers, a bit of 'fella', a Sandhurst chop and a man can do anything.
Had a guy like that at a previous job, hired as head of national account managers, he reckoned James Blunt had been his junior officer in Bosnia.

Was quite a nice bloke IIRC, and pretty good at his job, didn’t take it too seriously either.

A good read, found on Mastodon.
I must confess that after reading:

I used to want to be on LinkedIn! 😥

If you asked me two years ago I would have said, with genuine excitement, that I love hanging out on LinkedIn, that it's great for meeting people, engaging in worthwhile conversations on important topics, learning and growing, staying up to date with industry happenings, and yes, finding coaching and consulting clients.'

I gave up. I mean shooting's too good for anyone who says 'It [LinkedIn]'s actually an important part of my social life.'

Jesus, I must've still not woken up properly yet, I didn't really take in the "I must confess that after reading" bit in and half-thought the following sentences were your own work. I did think it sounded a bit out of character!

I do get messages about jobs from linked in and have applied to a few, I even had a couple of interviews.
No actual jobs though.
I had no idea people used it as a social media site. I see friends posting about the latest book they wrote or TV show they made etc. . . I thought it was just for corporate work brags and job listings.

I've had a few interviews off there and it was useful for basically checking out those interviewing me beforehand for other things. Get the occasional job offer since I never turned off open to work. Never know it could time out well.
Not if they keep ignoring where I live and offering me 3 days a week in office 400 miles away tho.

Actually posting things on it except the standard template when switching jobs tho... no. Have found some jobs posted there and not elsewhere through contacts reposting them when I was looking tho.

Bit odd when it was public jobs and it seemed rather, limited in reach when it wasn't on usual major job boards.

I got my first job in IT through there so I do see it's use. Whenever I get a new certification I update it and occasionally look at jobs on it.

It's not happened for a while but I used to like getting the offers of huge salaries for jobs I wasn't qualified for.

LinkedIn is the only way I get to source jobs - what's the beef here? Can't be arsed reading the thread... how the hell else are you supposed to find jobs these days? It's what all recruitment agencies and direct employers use...

I don't read the posts, just use the search jobs function.

I don't think I've used anything else to find a job in the last ten years. it's a very efficient system.

The people who post on it mostly as well as recruiter nonsense.

I'm not looking for work, but like to keep half an eye on what's our there, mostly to think about how I upskill.

I've noticed that Linkedin the worst offender for not putting a salary next to a job.

Yeh, they're changing that apparently. But honestly I've never used the posts etc on there, just the job search. How else do you find work? Any tips?

I got my current job through looking at my employer's website and seeing what jobs they had listed. For the last one before that, this is going back some years, but probably through looking on indeed.com or something like that?

Not the best person to ask as most my working life has been pretty unconventional, I only decided to do something more conventional 3.5 years ago and start IT.

Thinking about it's two from Linkedin. The first role, then very unusually, an NHS role (there's rarely budget to advertise there). Current role was internal.

In my industry, LinkedIn has been the place to find jobs for quite some time. There used to be a few other job websites, but they've pretty much died a death.

Yeh I had head of departments posting on LinkedIn and nowhere else. Then relying on reposting. It was odd.

In my field (graphic design) it's the only tool recruiters use really. The rest is word of mouth, but yeh - it's been LinkedIn for over a decade
