HMRC letter says I owe £6k+ tax

They can be like that but in my experience as a late payer of self assessment several years in a row, (as I am a useless twat when it comes to money), they are very reasonable and are happy to arrange payment plans. They would rather have the money gradually than not at all.

Works for 3 or 4 years then they do get a bit FUCK YOU PAY ME.

But the key is to talk to them. As Ann is going to.

Tangent.

Every January we were taken off our normal jobs to assist with the SA helpline.

This year they are not doing it. Heard a fuckwit from HMRC on the radio whilst in the shower saying 'ONLY HALF OF THE PEOPLE WHO CALLED ACTUALLY NEEDED TO CALL'.

Whilst not our favourite task, one of the most rewarding. To send someone on their way smiling, after they had come on in tears and near hysteria, was very satisfying. I could do a full return with someone in 45 minutes. My colleagues did remark though that it was the only time of the year I used my 'father to naughty child voice' to keep them on track. My busiest day was 99 calls in a 7.5 hour shift.

Yep, my dealing with them fell in the 'I am a useless twat' category. I decided not to pretend I was anything other than useless, and they were fine about it, even waived late fees. I guess there are a lot of us about. ;)

Let us know how you get on AnnO'Neemus my gut feeling from reading your posts is that the cafe did not process your holiday pay as an irregular payment, and this together with you starting the other job has caused the problem.

Have the P45 from the cafe job to hand when you call, explain that it was a payment of holiday pay as you had left the business (the cafe should have processed this as an irregular payment at 0T Month 1 tax code and on Weekly NI rates but probably didn’t as not every employer / payroll person is aware of this - processing as an irregular payment creates a specific marker on the file sent from employer to HMRC).

[The reason HMRC want payments like these processed as irregular payments is so they know that it’s a one-off payment to a leaver such as accrued holiday pay, rather than a payment such as salary that would be expected to continue]

Definitely sounds like some sort of cock up on their part. You KNOW it can't be right because you know what you've earned.

They do make errors and in my experience, they are actually really good at sorting things like this out. Just call them. Call at 9am when they open and you should get through fairly quick. As soon as a human looks at this, they will see its wrong.
Hope AnnO'Neemus hasn't been stitched up like a kipper
