Linkedin - should I join?

I think it can be useful, depending on your professional interests, but be careful not to invite everyone in your email address book. Once someone is invited once, they keep being invited, it would seem.

A couple of years ago, everyone seemed to be allowing LinkedIn access to their address books, and I must have done so as well, because my elderly father kept getting emails telling him when I posted something on there. I only rarely posted anything, and it was only ever about equality/diversity events I was organised, but he kept phoning me up and asking what the event was and why I had told him about them.

Took me ages to work out how to stop that from happening!

I've had an account for a long time, but it must be a couple of years since I last logged on to the site. The e-mail account its registered against is only used for that site, so there are probably tons of spammy e-mails sitting in it waiting for me to delete.

I nearly got a new job from it yesterday

Join it but cull ruthlessly, keep it only to people you know professionally.

It's quite handy for getting jobs offers if you are smart how you use it.

Managers and recruitment consultants love it - keep a minimal presence on it for headhunting purposes but anyone who isn’t a lunatic who spends more than 5 minutes a year on it needs watching if they aren’t taking the piss out of it.

Nextdoor for Business

Yeah, it's basically an online CV for me. I found it quite useful for stalking the people who were going to be interviewing me for my current job to get an idea of their backgrounds.

Very suspect company. When they first started they kept emailing me over and over saying that I needed to complete my profile but I have never even signed up for for it in the first place. It's Facebook for po faced career wankers anyway. I can't think of anything worse.

muchly no use as I am self employed, but did manage to trace an old friend I had totally lost contact with so we message via there to arrange a phone call as we live on different side of the planet.

It's good for sussing out the latest CEO who shuffles into your company for two years and does fuck except piss everyone off before moving on. It's even funnier watching what they update it with afterwards.
My previous job involved an absolute bull in a China shop Managing director. Absolute nightmare running a National oil company, a cursory look at his LinkedIn indicated tha he’d left the army as a half Colonel 7 years previously

How the fuck do you have the brass balls to front up running a National oil company after 15 years in the British army

Positively colonial

I assume the army involves less extra-judical murder and property damage so it's a big change

Red trousers, a bit of 'fella', a Sandhurst chop and a man can do anything.

I'm now on LinkedIn since I was made redundant and started to reskill.
Mainly to link up with people from the training programme I'm on and hopefully find some work.

They keep offering me 'pro' (obvs). How much is it and is it worth it?

No idea how much it is but no, not worth it.

It's worth connecting with as many people as possible if you're looking for work. And make sure your profile's filled out as recruitment agents (for good or bad...) use LinkedIn v heavily.
