Linkedin - should I join?

Im on Linkedln, I get roughly one email a week from people asking to connect, these days I ignore them completely since when my current contract (finally) ends I will retire but they have been useful in the past for leads. It's free which is definitely a mark in its favour.

I will admit that LinkedIn has been a useful advert - there have been a couple of projects I've worked on with exposure/integration with industry, and while the initial contact was through the work, the 'background check' on LinkedIn, and the fact that in having a LinkedIn account I was saying I was interested, I got a couple of good offers.

Obviously, it's full of complete wankers telling the most outrageous lies.

Had a guy like that at a previous job, hired as head of national account managers, he reckoned James Blunt had been his junior officer in Bosnia.

Was quite a nice bloke IIRC, and pretty good at his job, didn’t take it too seriously either.

It's a weird place though isn't it? I went on last night for the first time in ages to update my details. People who post there are odd.

I gave up. I mean shooting's too good for anyone who says 'It [LinkedIn]'s actually an important part of my social life.'

I regularly get messages from recruitment consultants (Social Housing is in a bit of a recruitment crisis atm) offering me opportunities. I'm nearly 60 ffs , I don't need any new opportunities.

I do get messages about jobs from linked in and have applied to a few, I even had a couple of interviews.
No actual jobs though.
I had no idea people used it as a social media site. I see friends posting about the latest book they wrote or TV show they made etc. . . I thought it was just for corporate work brags and job listings.

I've had a few interviews off there and it was useful for basically checking out those interviewing me beforehand for other things. Get the occasional job offer since I never turned off open to work. Never know it could time out well.
Not if they keep ignoring where I live and offering me 3 days a week in office 400 miles away tho.

Actually posting things on it except the standard template when switching jobs tho... no. Have found some jobs posted there and not elsewhere through contacts reposting them when I was looking tho.

Bit odd when it was public jobs and it seemed rather, limited in reach when it wasn't on usual major job boards.

I got my first job in IT through there so I do see it's use. Whenever I get a new certification I update it and occasionally look at jobs on it.

It's not happened for a while but I used to like getting the offers of huge salaries for jobs I wasn't qualified for.
