The Wailers might be one of the very few who went from vocal trio to proper band acc to your definition ska invita . The other way around seems a lot more common.

Clearly both The Fall and PiL count as a band; even though both had numerous line up changes over the years, they still retained the same name.

Prince & the Revo are/were a band, and Prince & the NPG are a different band, and you could choose to have either or both in your top 50.

If I was going to do this, I think I would have at least three different versions of Miles Davis' bands in my top ten, far less top 50.

On this basis my top fifty bands are

well over fifty versions of them

Beefheart pretty hit and miss for me, but rate them highly, and love it when they hit,
Arkestra is the same league. Making some unlistenable stuff is part of the gamble they're on i guess.

Primus is a personal teenage thing for me. I like metal with some funk in it, but its a hard thing to get right, and I often go back to a bit of primus once in a while - great music but i also like the mind space and attitude

Tap was a bit of a joke on the list but have given me a lot of genuine pleasure. Not a true great though tbf

The Wikipedia page for 'band (rock & pop)' allows duos. Not sure what kind of mad universe The White Stripes and The Pet Shop Boys don't count as bands in.

I think for a band to be a band its about all the musicians counting as regular part of the line-up IYNWIM

Two could be a band even if one just played instruments and the other just sang.

In addition to those examples already mentioned, Suicide, Soft Cell, Yazoo.

It's difficult. Most bands I like have done some great stuff and some absolute trash. Bands that I rate that didn't put a foot wrong, probably only did one album or less. Unfair to say they are better than a band that had one great album and 20 shit ones.

Psychocandy = great
Automatic and beyond = utter utter shite

Soul Mining = great
Mind Bomb and beyond = utter utter shite

Let's play domination = great
There isn't anything else after that.

i think its borderline
dictionary definition of a band is a "group of musicians" - is 2 people a group? yeah i guess so, but i think the spirit of a band banding together to form a band needs more than two really. If you can make a lot of noise with 2 people then thats better, but a folk duo of a guitar and vocalist isnt really a band IMO
