Let's share our particular Top50 bands

On the bands and underrepresentation of poc, to an extent hasnt bands been less of a black thing? I. E, Motown and stax had brilliant house bands and songwriters who worked with the umpteen different vocal artists. A lot of rap and hip hop artists work as individuals.
Similar problem with "favourite albums".

Obviously many exceptions to this, but lists of bands are always skewed towards white artists.

On reflection I think that's right. The set up in soul, r&b etc is more solo artiste or vocal group with amazing backing band in the studio or on stage than group with instruments.

And a list of mine if anyone is interested.

No bad brains, no Supremes, no Lee "scratch" Perry, no witch, no little richard or chuck berry...

No garbage, no slits, not even the bangles, no Janis Joplin...
thread has made me think as to what counts as a band precisely

Lee perry, little richard and chuck berry not bands i think
bad brains are a band
Supremes...not a band, but a vocal group?

I think for a band to be a band its about all the musicians counting as regular part of the line-up IYNWIM

I took band to mean artist. Under your scheme no prince, probably no fall, arguably no pil

theres no way you can call AphexTwin a band for example.
Prince and the Revoluion - thats a band
Prince and the NPG thats a band
Clearly both The Fall and PiL count as a band; even though both had numerous line up changes over the years, they still retained the same name.

Prince & the Revo are/were a band, and Prince & the NPG are a different band, and you could choose to have either or both in your top 50.

If I was going to do this, I think I would have at least three different versions of Miles Davis' bands in my top ten, far less top 50.

for the sake of conversation you might be able to escape the trap of having to name every great jazz line-up by saying they're not bands, but line-ups of indiviudal musicians

count bassie orchestra is probably a band, as is Sun Ra's Arkestra - one lineup who did one album...probably not quite

In the case of Miles, there are definitely different bands which worked with essentially the same line up for a significant period of time.

For example, the so called first great quintet with Coltrane, Garland, Chambers and Jones, and the second great quintet with Shorter, Hancock, Carter and Williams. For my money, those two count as two separate bands, just as the two different Prince bands do.

Oh, it's going top be far too much effort now. I'll have to scrub 90% of those I picked.

Anyhow Crannadict started this. They should set the rules. Top 50 bands ending in ***erries

What about the traditional synthpop duo of charismatic front person and nerd with pile of electronics? Band or not band?

What about an ever changing collective who produce some music individually and some music collaboratively but release it all under one name. Band or not band?

What about an act that started with 3 members, dropped to 2 members but is now one person. Are they still a band or did they stop being a band at some point?

Once you've eliminated solo artists, front people or vocal groups backed by session musicians or house bands, and everything else that isn't a 'band' is quite hard and very limiting to come up with a top 50. It's hard enough anyway: does that band that did one album or a few tracks you love and a load of stuff you don't care about deserve to be on the list? Does a band that only ever made one record and may not've played live deserve to be on the list?

Really, I think great records are more important than great bands.

not on this this thread ;P

yeah its hard.

Im adding a minimum of 3 members as another rule. One person is a solo artist, 2 is borderline but more likely a duo, 3+ is a band.

Borderline. I'd say 3 minimum personally.

No. A great band shouldve done a lot to rise to the ranks of GREAT

if that's your list I'm quite surprised. Nothing against your taste, just wouldn't have expected you to include certain things and leave out others.
