Just Stop Oil

No, but I was discussing actions against hydrocarbon extraction and climate related areas, and my point was none of JSO (I expect) are actively involved in those industries/areas of work so lack the opportunity for it. Same as strike action for most of them I expect.
surely we all do stuff where we can, ie in the workplaces or whatnot where we find ourselves. like one of the supermarkets says, every little helps.

There are (limited) examples of climate and environmental issues being incorporated into workplace disputes, the TUC employs a Green Bargaining worker in Yorkshire - I'm sure this is an area of union activism that will grow rapidly.

It's not as though this issue needs publicising, though, is it?
It's not like the state is suppressing all mention of global climate change.
Im not sure that everybody has taken the message on board....no, I'm certain not everyone has taken the message on board and many still need convincing.

Stopping people enjoying themselves at the theatre is not likely to convince them, though.

A lot of people will have been dragged along and heaved a great sigh of relief at being saved from proceedings by the protest and having the opportunity to retire to the pub.

Not saying it’s going to be exactly zero sum, but I can’t think of a better place for JSO’s theatrics.

I feel (certainly in the long-standing thread in the protest sub-forum), that JSO's tactics have become a circular argument that is unlikely to move further. Practically all of us here agree about the severity of the climate change situation, and how much more fucked we are very likely all going to be within our lifetimes, never mind future generations. Some people think all actions are justified given the situation, others think some of those actions might not do much good or even be counterproductive.

Both sides of the argument have valid points IMO. But ultimately I myself feel that we're sadly well past the point whereby the mission statement aims of JSO would make any worthwhile difference to the planet even if they were met in full tomorrow. At this point it would be more sense IMO if JSO reintegrated with the wider XR movement. They can continue their high profile protests, which are never going to please everyone (and I myself think some of them genuinely are doing more harm than good from a public opinion angle), but at this point, campaigning for an end to new gas and oil licences in the UK seems about as useful a weapon as trying to put out a house fire with a 1L water spray bottle.

Yes, good point. Even going carbon neutral tomorrow would not stop climate change.

I just had to check that FoE were still around. Yes they are, but they are not getting their voices heard.

Shouldn’t be a surprise that people that go and see Les Mis are awful - wonder what their reaction to the French Revolution barricades stopping hard working families would’ve been?

They've just had their evening's entertainment interrupted. Nobody is going to respond well to that, even if it's done in the name of a good cause. That's not people being awful, that's people being human.

It’s people that go and see Les Mis so of course they’re awful. That shouldn’t be controversial.

It's a stage adaptation of a novel by Victor Hugo. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. You've just got a case of the sour grapes because the audience for this particular show didn't respond well to having the entertainment they paid to see being interrupted. The same thing would have happened at pretty much any other show at the theatre. You are being silly.

Yeah - completely agree. All people that go and see musicals are awful!

I mean, I fucking hate musical theatre* with a passion, but this does sound a bit snobby, a bit laughing at the working class and lower middle classes who like this kind of thing rather than the opera or ballet like us more culturally educated people...

*Apart from Book of Mormon, which was very very funny.

I don’t like opera or ballet either.

The book of Mormon was and still is puerile shit even after its so called decolonisation update. I left before the end. Interrupting it would have made it 100% more interesting
