I've been caught out thinking I have someone on hold and saying some unkind stuff, working in call centres (cost me a job once, although, tbf, was already at last orders in the Last Chance Salooon at that place, before I did it, but all I said was "I've got some woman prattling on", nothing like this, where the Job centre woman is going on about "popping out kids like pigs" - so fucking cunty, I sincerely hope she gets sacked, and I don't say that lightly).

Could hardly have any more damning proof about the attitude of some DWP staff (I'm sure there are plenty that aren't total cunts, doing a hard job with lots of top down pressure to cut peoples benefits, but when you hear this evidence it confirms some of your worst suspicions about a certain type of arsehole who would take that job...).

Strange then that whenever I've had to sign on they've been fuck all use as far as job hunting goes. They shame you when you sign on, resent you when you turn up and try to screw you over when they can. Sure lots of them are just doing a shitty job as best they can but never feels like it when you're on the other side of the desk.

Don't know what to think about the other person on the tape, the ranty womans colleague. She doesn't say much, and could either be thinking "why do I have to work with this arsehole?" and not feeling able to challenge the venomous bollocks, or maybe she encourages it all and even joins in from time to time, just not this time?

The line "You are, aren't you" when the main woman says she is going to not be very politically correct that afternoon is as bland as bland can be. Even the follow up "And I don't blame you" could just be gentle humouring of a total dick that you can't be bothered to argue with - sort of saying something that shows you aren't condemning them, without actually joining in or actively encouraging such bullshit. That's the most charitable interpretation I can come up with, not knowing the office politics and what-not.

The less charitable interpretation is that she is totally complicit and actively encouraging the main woman, and is simply being more reserved with her prejudices because she knows better than to voice them.

I have started challenging my boss as now 6 months in ( for her) I am finding her really judgemental, hard and lacking compassion at times. I also quite like her and pose my challenge as a discussion: ' So what are you saying'? 'Of course she ( upset pregnant woman) is anxious'. It's a slippery slope, lack of care and compassion for the people you are caring for followed by the same attitude towards the people you are managing. I wonder how long she will last? From my experiences of the job centre the place is misnamed. They never did anything to help me get a job. In fact they made it harder for me to get a job by placing a load of hurdles in front of me and threatening to cut my benefits if I didn't cross all the T's and dot the i's.

They aren't an uncle who says 'oh I can get you in with this guy I know who owes me a favour'.

Instead they are your nagging dad who moans and moans that you ain't found a job yet, when are you going to get a job? Etc. Whilst forcing you to chores all day long (threatening to stop your allowance if you don't) so that you have no time or energy to go looking for one properly.

On the story itself, of course it's a disgusting thing to say, and hopefully the worker will be dismissed, but after all the demonisation of benefit claimers we've seen over the years it's not surprising that there are many people, including JC workers, who think this way.

I suppose the one good thing about this story is that the individual was caught and may be dealt with, but unfortunately that will do nothing to address the wider issue.

Why thats kind of the Unions job if they they dont even try to save her job whats the point of the union?
She doesnt desreve the support but soldiraty does sort of mean you turn up and support even the twats because otherwise theres no point.

An individual rep doesn't have to represent someone but the union does have a duty to provide representation for their members so she would get representation by someone if she was a member. That would likely consist of making sure there were no extenuating circumstances and that procedure is followed correctly in disciplining her.

Saying that, I'd be surprised if she is a PCS member. The few colleagues I encountered with disgusting attitudes like that were also very anti union.

What a fucking arsehole. I don't work for the DWP but I know that her views are not representative of the people I've met that work there, thank fuck.

It's 20 years since I last signed on, but it seems nothing's changed whenever I hear anything about the experience from anyone. It was never about getting people into work, always about blaming them, shaming them and grinding them down for being unemployed.

Doubtless there are some well-intentioned staff in that environment but the culture is calculated to breed contempt for the 'clients', and predominantly seems to attract the kind of person who combines lack of empathy, bureaucratic pedantry and schadenfreude but without the personal bravery required to be a traffic warden.
