Insurance company CEO assassinated in New York

Given he'd taken the time to leave a bag with Monopoly money, masked up and worn something bland I think this is a man with a gun and silencer rather than THE man. And the shit who threw him under the bus needs talking to unless it was a deliberate deception. I mean McDonalds?? Really? Not a Mom and Pop place with no cameras? :hmm:
Maybe he was hoping trump would pop in for a quarter pounder and some chicken nuggets :hmm:

"The image, taken from a surveillance camera in the Upper West side hostel where the gunman stayed while he was in New York, made its way to a McDonald’s employee who recognized a man eating at the restaurant Monday morning as the person of interest."

:(
Must be the only person in the US to get value for money out of a health insurance company. :hmm:

Sadly, she's not even on the shortlist, which is full of rich, privileged people.

Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff owns Time, he's been praising Trump and Musk etc. since the election so I think this year's pick is going to be either Trump or one of the occasional cop-out entries like "The Newsmakers" or "The Disruptors."

I don't think anybody has read Time magazine in about 25 years so I'm not sure why their Person of the Year remains such a big deal

Luigi Mangione was named as the person of interest in the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, police confirmed on Monday.

The 26-year-old suspect is originally from Towson, Maryland, and is an anti-capitalist former Ivy League student - who was valedictorian at his high school.

The man has ties to San Francisco, and used to live in Honolulu, Hawaii, cops confirmed. He has not been charged in connection to the death of Thompson.

He was arrested on firearm charges on Monday, after an elderly McDonald's worker spotted him inside the restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said: 'Members of the Altoona Police Department arrested Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old male, on firearms charges.

'At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen targeted murder of Brian Thompson.'

Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan last week, ahead of a work conference. He was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, one of the largest medical insurers in the country.

Mangione, 26, does not have a criminal history, and police said his name was not on their radar until the arrest in Pennsylvania today.

He was found with a gun, a silencer, and a manifesto, which outlined his disdain for the healthcare system. The man was also wearing clothes that matched the description of the suspect.

Mangione attended the coveted University of Pennsylvania, where he gained a degree in engineering in 2020. Before this, he graduated as valedictorian from the Gilman School in Baltimore, where tuition costs nearly $40,000 a year.

Netanyahu? Why not Assad?

The Time Person of the Year, is the person considered to have had the biggest impact on the world in the previous 12 months, regardless of whether that impact was good or bad.

Adolf Hitler won it in 1938 and Stalin won it twice.

By that qualification, Pelicot doesn't come anywhere close to Netanyahu.

Few do.

I think they started backing away from that policy in 2001, when Rudy Giuliani was chosen over Osama bin Laden

Jury service interviews are going to be entertaining :D

"Have you ever been bankrupted by being randomly and unfairly refused medical insurance payouts for a valid claim?"
iirc, medical debt is the number one reason for personal bankruptcy in the US.

ETA: They will struggle to find someone who hasn't been adversely impacted by medical debt, either their own medical bills or those of their immediate family, or those of wider family members, or whose friends or colleagues have been adversely impacted.

I remember being really shocked several years ago, when 'Obamacare' was being debated and people were commenting their own personal experiences via social media. I vaguely recall a video that was a series of people holding up paper or post-its with stuff written on, and I recall a woman whose comment was something like 'After being diagnosed with breast cancer I had to save up for three months before I could start treatment'. I remember feeling appalled, that that was the state of affairs in one of the richest countries in the world. I couldn't imagine how it might feel to receive that kind of diagnosis and know that there was nothing you could do about it, except try to save up.
