I don't get Nico.

I saw her (trying) to support Siouxsie and the Banshees in Bristol in 70-something - just her and a harmonium and a room full of beer-swilling "punks".
:(

EDIT :-

17/10/78 apparently...

Fucking hell, I had no clue. Next time I hear her frail little voice will be thinking of her smashing broken glass into someone's face saying she didn't like black people. jesus.

I never understood why they had a memorial service for her when she died at a church in Holmfirth. They also have an evening of remembrance for her at the Holmfirth Film Festival. But maybe it is apt for one of the last of the summer whiners.

She did and was quite busy on the gig scene around the West Riding and Greater Manchester allegedly.

She made it up here in that period as well - I remember it as a challenging/uncomfortable/detached gig and many of the people there were showing more interest in the rising Manc musicians in her band - who were anything but her.

Songs they never play on the radio by James Young is a good read, about being in Nico's band around the nadir of her fortunes. Brixton, Johns Cale and Cooper Clarke, plus much heroin and racism all feature.

she existed in a sad, tedious and sordid world and the book gets it spot on.
