Hurricane Sandy - "Perfect Storm"

That's part of the problem. The other part is that the media have a vested interest in exaggerating, especially before the storm. This time they were beyond ridiculous, you'd have thought the bleeding world was ending. There was no need to cancel my flight, let alone delay it for three freaking days.

There's worse places to be stuck mind.

ignorance is bliss, I guess
hospitals without power. at least 16 dead. millions without power. massive flooding. evacuations. shipwrecks. neighborhoods on fire.

nah, no big deal. just because nothing really happened right where you were.

How many people would normally die in a night over an area that size with a similar population?

probably zero due to weather.
also, $40 billion estimated damage.
listen, this was a HUGE storm, not media hype. that is my point. by tomorrow, there will be more and more reports coming in, and it won't be pretty (it's the middle of the night here still)

I'm not disputing any of that I was just asking a question Miss C ;) I just wonder how many people die in an area that size under normal circs. Hope you're safe and well.

Ignore it, it's just attention-seeking crap. Much like most of this thread last night in fact. Still, who cares about being on-topic when there's some dick prancing round in front of a street camera eh.
Meanwhile, the NYT website is doing a sterling job. I recommend it to anyone complaining about the BBC/CNN.

I'm supposed to fly to NYC tomorrow morning with Virgin and it's likely that by then flights are operational again. But is there much point in going ? The subway probably won't be working and all my favourite hang outs are in Lower Manhattan, which has been reported flooded. It will probably even be problematic to get into Manhattan from the airport and I have no idea what state the hotel is in.

I probably won't get compensation of any kind if I don't go, though I wonder if Virgin can do with extra seats to get people back who got stranded here. A flight to NYC is the type of expense I can only shell out for once a year. :(

Reno - I reckon that things will get up and running pretty quickly, except in the most affected neighbourhoods (basically the red zone on the NYT map). The transport will be the main problem. But if you can get yourself onto Manhattan - and you're not staying somewhere that's been flooded - then I reckon it will still be worth going :)
After all, if you can't get the money back then it'd be a shame to lose it all and get nothing from it.

ok. thanks. sorry to be defensive, I'm just tired and have been tense all day, but I'm fine otherwise.

to answer your question, it's a huge area. Basically the entire east coast. so, I'm guessing 100's at least. 1000's?

Reno, if you're on Manhattan the buses should be up and running by the time you get there - and there will probably be less traffic so they might be a quicker way of getting around.

Well I hope it doesn't spoil your holiday

Oh fuck off you stupid, condescending cunt.

It wasn't you scraping together your money to see if you can afford a much deserved holiday and are now out of pocket. I was asking people who are there, as they are making claims that the catastrophe has been exaggerrated. If the city more or less functional again by Friday, it may still be worth going.

I would say there's a good chance that you will be able to come and at least get around by then. The water will recede, they will get the subways working. Other than that it's probably a case-by-case thing as far as whether the places you want to go will be functioning as normal or still dealing with clean-up etc.

Christ. The next time hundreds of people die in a flood in Pakistan or something I expect at least equal coverage from the media. I almost puked this morning listening to a 'volunteer' being interviewed on the beeb.

Harden the the fuck up, septics.

Ha, switched on Sky News last night and saw a mate (currently working / travelling in the US), being interviewed in his power-cut NY apartment, mental.

He lives on a high floor and said the building felt like it was swaying (he'd also had 2/3 bottles of wine by this point, so not sure how much was down to Sandy)

No big deal is exactly right.

This was completely over-hyped, at least as far as the USA is concerned. From reading the news reports you'd have thought the whole of Manhattan was under water.

As others have pointed out already, the real problems have been suffered by small, poor nations, to whom no-one ever pays much attention. But anything that seems likely to disrupt the east coast of the USA is splashed all over, like it's the end of the world. Quite sickening actually.

Precisely. They go into hysterics over here about the slightest potential threat to their well-being. Remember "bird flu" and all that--these diseases were going to kill everyone and destroy everything too.

Americans are the best and noblest people in the world. But they really need to develop a stiff upper lip.

Levy broken in Moonachie, NJ borough, town and 3 more in 4 to 5 feet of water, rescueing under way (this actually happened 5 or so hours ago, but mainstream media only just reporting it, although Twitter was alive with the story).

A levee broke in northern New Jersey on Tuesday, flooding the towns of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt with 4 to 5 feet (1.2m to 1.5m) of water, officials told Reuters.
"We are in rescue mode," said Geanne Baratta, chief of the Bergen County Executive. There were no reports of fatalities as of yet, she said.
Baratta said the three towns had been "devastated" by the flood of water.

Everything will be completely back to normal. Not tomorrow, but today.
