Huge explosion in Lebanon, 4th Aug 2020

Quick translation (not mine): The grain silos next to the epicenter were empty and all the grain are still onboard 4 cargo ships that are stranded on sea since the head of our central bank hasn't payed them, due to the financial crisis.

Sky was reporting earlier that their currency has lost 80% of its value this year.

Bellingcat is a mouthpiece of the western intelligence services. Fact.

It has direct links to the Integrity Initiative and (the more american) Institute for Statecraft. It's main purpose is to support the US/UK/NATO narratives in geo-political matters.

Many of their utterings, lies, fabrications and twistings can be found posted and promoted verbatim on this site by certain urbanites, as well as direct links to their stuff without making it clear who they are and what they do. Fact.

Any reasonable adult who can't find that out with a quick search is a liar or incompetent. Fact.

The IMF refused any financial assistance earlier this year due to the level of corruption within the government.

Small mercies hopefully.

This post has done more to sell Bellingcat to me than anything else.

The image I saw of the silos earlier ^^^ - there is spilt grain heaped up against the collapsed structure. One of the grain ships that was moored at the unloading dock looks to be sinking by the stern. The conveyor that would be used to move the grain to the silo building is destroyed.
Also. I would be very surprised If any of the silos on the far side from the explosion site are completely undamaged, and their contents un-contaminated.

That's a lot of unsafe material in a country that already has a problem with corruption, poverty & hunger and the site is not only dangerous but insecure.

If there is grain aboard ships "at sea" where are they going to unload it ? - bulk carriers like that require specialised equipment (my late father was designing silos / grain handling kit when I was a teenager).

I'd be stunned if any of the infrastructure at Beruit airport is still working - the runways should be fine/ok, but the radars, the communications, the fuel distribution systems etc.. are probably fucked.

The big military airlift aircraft will be able to get in and try to rebuild capacity like air transportable radars and ATC systems, but it will take a bit of time. The fuel issue shouldn't be the problem it might otherwise be because there are lots of big international airports not far away that aircraft can pop into to fill up the tanks, but it's not going to help.

Sealift, which can bring in much larger quantities of aid - water purification systems, field hospitals, mobile bakeries, huge numbers of tents and sanitation systems - is a lot easier when you have a working port, and Beruit doesn't. Amphibious assault and logistics support ships can put stuff on the beach, but you need lots of lorries to move it to where it need to be.

Was there any kind of wave/tsunami type thing precipitated by this explosion? I would have thought given the location it would create something quite big but no mention that I’ve seen, sort of thing that can do a lot of damage. Maybe partially contained by harbour structures?

allies tested the idea during world war 2 to get a destructive wave you need 2,000,000 kg of explosives 8km out to see and also said it was not an effective weapon

not enough explosives in this one and it was a surface explosion in shallow water

The grain silo seems to be in the heart of the port area. OTOH the big infrastructure like jetties and roads tends to be pretty sturdy, so it's quite likely that quite a bit has survived to to some extent or other - it will look crap, and fragile stuff like lights will be wiped out, and it's probable that it will have to be demolished at some stage - but it's quite likely that some port infrastructure has been left intact. That makes efficient sealift possible, which is a good thing...

5.4 kilotons :(

What a year this is turning out to be

Turns out it was much less than that.(though still awful) I don't mind admitting when I get things wrong.

I wonder if this lot will... https://twitter.com/veteranstoday

I note that a number of twitter accounts are going to town on that 'veteranstoday' group - it's a Kremlin front job: tax rebates, conspiracy theories, anti-semtism, and the odd bit of 'powerful Russia/wise Putin' stuff.
