Homophobic moron glasses gay guy at Kentish Drovers pub in Peckham

So fucking depressing to see what appears to be a rise in homophobic hate crime.

A young man had a glass smashed into his face for holding hands with his boyfriend in an unprovoked homophobic attack at a Wetherspoon pub.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was attacked at the Kentish Drovers pub in Peckham late on Sunday evening, police said.

A witness told the Standard that the attacker became aggressive towards the victim and his boyfriend when he saw that they were holding hands.

He approached the couple and smashed a glass into the victim’s face, the witness said.

What a cunt. Hope he's caught and dealt with - they should have decent CCTV in Wetherspoons.

I've noticed some more random abuse in public recently - some homophobic stuff directed at me, which I'm not bothered about as they can go fuck themselves. Another one was when I walking down a street in the city centre in Manchester recently and I was overtaking but just level to a black woman using a stick (the street was uphill, so she was understandably slower than me). Some twat in a taxi van leaned out of the window and hollered in our direction 'leave it out' as if she was faking it. Neanderthal cunt.

It's impossible to get your head round homophobic/racist shit in this day and age. Hope these primitive nutters aren't emboldened by the chaos of Brexit when it arrives.

There's always a bit of an atmosphere in there whenever I've been. It can be tense. It's kind of like the last place to go in Peckham coz every other pub has been closed or immaculately tarted up and gentrified so not everyone really feels welcome.

But also

I was walking down the street this morning first thing and two men were walking ahead of me holding hands. As they approached the bus stop I felt a little bit of worry because of the young'uns at the bustop, and I remember back in the 90s how groups like this at the bus stop would go all "batty-boy" offensive. But they looked and saw and ignored. Because normal.

That's good to hear. :)

But sadly not universal - even in cities with large numbers of gay people like Manchester and London. Some people are just cunts. :(

Oh yer, I know. It's horrible. But there are these little glimmers too. And I think they're worth noting. Not because it makes any of the shit less shit, but because it's good to remember that the shit is not the whole story.

True enough - things are slowly changing for the better, but is patchy and a slow process. Hopefully we'll all get there at some point. :)

I like to think that younger people these days are growing up in a world where pop, film, sports, social stars are much more open about being gay or bi, they see this around them constantly when growing up, and it really isn't such a big deal. Kids can be openly gay nowadays which would have been impossible when I was at school (and I'm not _that_ old). I'm still wary though; these things are centuries-old and they don't just vanish.

I was thinking about this the other day and thinking that there are older people in my family who started out quite homophobic but over the years have become more tolerant. I couldn't imagine it happening the other way round (tolerant becoming intolerant) which gives me hope for the future. Or maybe I'm just naive.

Don't understand why people give a shit about how other's live their lives.

If they vote Tory that affects me.

If they fuck a man or a woman or a blowup doll it doesn't affect me one jot so why the fuck should we give a shit?

I'm still trying to come to terms with this post.

I've been in this pub numerous times over the last 15 years - mostly late at night (it closes at midnight all week). Normally it's pretty quiet - and to my mind relaxed.

However last Thursday I went in with a friend and we were "engaged" by a woman on the opposite side of the table we sat at - she asking if we were the guys from Gogglebox - I presume she meant the gay couple from Brighton.

Not sure what this was all about - but it struck me that the pub at 10.30 pm was much more crowded than I normally found it, and also the mix of customers was quite diverse - the usual older West Indian regulars, a lot of bright young things from the arty scene and heavy duty Irish builder/van driver types and their lady friends.

Actually it is difficult in a place like that when people have had too much to drink, which they can afford at Wetherspoons prices. You could be apparently having a sensible discussion one minute and it erupt into violence a minute later.

As to the lady asking about me and friend being on Gogglebox - I said I knew Sandy and Sandra who went to the Beehive she was delighted. One of the blokes then wanted to buy us drinks.

We left and went to the Fox on the Hill - which fortunately was dead as a dodo, but the drinks are 10p/pint cheaper.

Not sure I would care to hold hands with a boyfriend in the Kentish Drover. Maybe a young guy of 23 might not be sensitive to potentially hostile people in a place like Peckham.

Final point - I actually find it quite irritating if I get stuck behind or beside a courting heterosexual couple at the Proms. And they nearly always are heterosexual. Extrapolating I guess straight guys might find hand-holding gays annoying, and if you add the dis-inhibition of a few pints there is the danger of acting out.
