Tonight in Berne the Dutch play Italy: tonight, at a timeoverlapping with the match, the Huesca Film Festival have a showing of Night of the Hunter.

I have to choose. Laughton v Van Basten. Mitchum v Del Piero. Who will prevail in the big head-to-head?

Vote now, and I promise to take no notice whatsoever....

Um, you can watch films any time. They don't change each time you watch them.

I mean, if they could, then film would easily be preferable to football. Imagine if, for instance, you had a copy of Star Wars where you never knew what was going to happen. One night you could watch it and see Luke Skywalker slaughtering Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen at the start of the film and going off, rebelliously, to join the Empire. In another version, you would see Darth Vader blow up the Millennium Falcon and triumph over the Rebels. If films were like that, there would be no question. Film would be preferable.

But until such films begin to exist, in the context of a particular one off-instance, the football has to take preference. You can tape the film and watch it later. It's not really the same watching a football match which has been taped, even if you do manage to avoid finding out the score.

The football.

Largely because I've no idea what 'Night of the Hunter' is about.

It's kinda Football Live v the Cinema Experience.

If you could record the match then I'd be tempted to do that, as there'll be less difference, especially if you avoid finding out the result beforehand, whereas there's a big difference between seeing a film at the cinema and watching it at home.

If not, then I think the football might shade it.

Saying all that, I passed up the opportunity to go to the cinema on Saturday to watch the Portugal v Turkey match, so who am I to say

Choose fupball every time. All other forms of culture should be banned during Euros and World Cups. The only other TV allowable in this period should be re-runs of Terry and June to keep everybody tuned to Gary Linneker's words of wisdom. 1990 was an abomination - World Cup + tenors!:mad::mad:

To add: Opening cermonies should also be banned. Diana Ross used to be a great penalty taker - but add in a bit of singing and her whole technique became sub-Ronaldoesque. Truly, the sleep of reason breeds monsters. :(

Immediate reaction was to go for the footy but if it's on a big screen then it's a whole different ball game. What other factors might come into play...outdoor screening, VCR recording capabilities, prior viewings of the film...
