France V Holland

Quality game I think the Dutch can go all the way, I think a Holland v Spain final based on what i've seen so far, assuming of course they don't meet beforehand.
What odds were Holland to win before the tournament? Their chances weren't being rated too high so i'm guessing you could get good odds, good call to anyone who did...

If Holland beat Romania and France draw with Italy a team will qualify from this group with 2 points. Has that ever happened before (in the 3 teams per group and 3 points for a win era)?

If Romania don't beat the Dutch, then Italy - France could go to penalties as well.

But this match has just confirmed what I thought from the first round of games: the Dutch are the only team that are strong in every area and don't have any weak links. Great keeper, decent defence (which has received good tests in both games), all kinds of attacking flair with multiple players who can pass and go past defenders at pace, all playing off van Nistelrooy. Plus in this game we've seen van Basten successfully change the game by switching the personnel and formation. And as they've just mentioned on the telly, they seem to have good team spirit, in contrast to previous Dutch teams. I should have lumped on a few days ago, they'll be the bookies favourites after this.

In that case it'll go to penalties between France and Italy, won't it (depending on how much the Dutch beat Romania)?

I disagree that they aren't weak in any area(in reply to red o) their defence is a bit weak but their attacking ability/goalkeeper makes up for that.

But frankly, every other potential winner in the tournament has looked weak at the back as well (Spain included). The East European teams look solid, but have very little creativity. The Dutch have been as good as anyone else defensively, and van der Sar looks right on top of his game.

Wow. The Dutch looked great. Hope they get to play the Portuguese, with their weak defenses and amazing attacks, that game would be amazing. They both have that philosophy that they shouldn't sit back on their leads like most teams do, but go out and get another goal. You could say the same about the Spanish too.

That last Dutch goal could cost France a lot... Am I right to say that if it had finished 3-1 France would have been above Italy on goal difference? As it stands Italy is above France so if Romania loses all they would need is a draw.

I could see Italy just doing that and then just scraping their way to the final and winning it...

Anyways, fantastic game. Holland are a joy to watch, it has to be said...

The game I want to see is Holland - Spain, the two best teams by a distance. That might be the nearest thing to footballing heaven.

France and Italy have identical records -scored 1, conceded 4, 1 point-, Romania have two points and level goal difference, so if France and Italy draw and Holland really stuff Romania then it'll go to penalties between France and Italy.

But try this: Holland beat Romania 3-0, Italy and France draw 0-0, then Italy, France and Romania will all have identical records, and all the games between them will have been drawn. Then, presumably, it'll have to be down to the drawing of lots

Takeshi's castle to decide who goes through.

In that last one, I reckon France go through on goals scored ...

Brilliant skillful attacking play from lots of teams so far. On this evidence, England are way short of the mark at the moment. Down there with the two hosts.
