France V Holland

To achieve that, certain big name players will have to get the chop.

i agree - the charlie big potatoes need to go - not sure what england players have it at the moment tbh - rooney maybe, gerrard (if lampard isn't there) hargreaves, beckham used to

Yes, Beckham used to. Gerrard and Lampard clearly should never play in the same team. Ferdinand has the right spirit, I think.

One problem with England selection, I think, has been that they have gone for the star players rather than picking the best team. Owen, bless him, has to be axed now, for instance.

i have doubts about ferdinand - the drug test nonsense - his tv career, he's improved as a player, is very experienced now - and deserves to be in the side, but there's always a nagging doubt with me

Er, sven was in charge for a long time and still couldn't get any real team spirit going. How long must a manager be around before you're satisfied and can't critcize, then? Tbh, I never had full faith in Mcclaren as he never had the right experience. I have more faith in Capello.
England have had averaged a new manager every two years for the last decade.

But the problem isn't so much that as the rabid, demanding attitude of the English fans and media who immediately get on the back of any new manager who doesn't manage to instantly turn around the team's fortunes.

If the manager doesn't feel secure in their position it's not going to do much for team spirit.

England's current squad would have been destroyed by Holland and with their ever-changing managers, there's not much chance of a real team spirit developing.

i agree

the england 'team' is shit because they aren't a team they are a bunch of players

if england were a team they would be able to turn holland italy germany over imo

We gave Sven loads of time, and well he didn't play other players and always chose the same lampard/gerrard system that never worked and no surprise, failed despite being given time. Steve Mcclaren never had the right experience, i was never comfortable with him being in charge, and that was always going to work against him. I believe were a lot more realistic these days as fans about what to expect, i am anyway and people i know are, and prepared to give Capello the right amount of time as he has the right knowledge to take us to where we want to get to imo. But if someone like Mcclaren walks into the job without having really earned it, then sorry, he shouldn't be there in the first place.

I think that is a little deluded.

England need to change their players. Look at the successful French teams. They did not hesitate to leave out the likes of Cantona or Ginola if they did not fit into the team. England never seem to do that.

Watched this in a bar full of French. Wasn't too popular when I stood up and shouted "OH WHAT A FUCKING GREAT GOAL!" when Van Persie scored :D

Holland are better than the sum of their parts (as are Croatia for that matter), France are less than the sum of theirs (ditto England).

It's a team game.

that isn't really fair

erikkson had 2 tournaments which is what ational managers get

mclaren was sacked because he fucked up the fucking qualifying

I think that until the best England players spend a period abroad they're never going to develop into world-class players: it's justthat extra bit of experience that the very best know they need.

Kevin Keegan went to Germany when Liverpool were the best team in the world, basically for that reason.

And had no real experience which will always work against you especially if you fuck up a country like england in the qualifying. Its just not realistic to expect Mcclaren to be given more time in that situation.

Spain are underachievers with nearly all their players in their home league, too. But then again, so are Italy's players and they are world champions.

when france left out cantona and ginola they didn't make any impression at all

france in the 90s were even worse than england for having appaling coaches and amazing players

it would be impossible to lose with the players that france had in 98 and 2000

ok, i know that england were utter shit

but say playing a 4-4-2

you have

ashley cole, john terry, rio ferdinand, wayne bridge

beckham, lampard, gerrard, hargreaves

rooney, owen

i think all of those players would be starting on the croatia team. shit team, but a lot of good players

Cole at RB over Corluka? No. Terry and Hargreaves over the Kovac brothers. No. Bridge over Pranjic, who can defend AND attack. No. Simunic over Ferdinand, hell no. Ferdinand tries to play too clever whereas Josep's good for a yellow card a game through sticking one on the opposition. Beckham over Srna......NO. Lampard over Modric.......NO. Gerrard over Kranjcar.....NO. Owen over Eduardo......NOOOOOOOO. Rooney over Olic.....NOOOOOOOOOOO.

Because of.....

THIS ^

Croatia are a good team. Spain and Holland are a GREAT team.

England are....well, Austria, Greece and Switzerland. Not even Romania. Maybe Sweden if we're lucky.

exactly

there was a big fuss about having an english coach

same as keegan and hoddle, they get them a few years too early and then blame them for not being able to hack it

who gives a fuck anyways :D

Which is why against the footballing powerhouse that is Paraguay it took extra time for them to win in 98, as well as going the full distance to penalties against Italy.

I mean, honestly.

I would say that England actually had a fair amount of luck in 96. Scotland missed a penalty, and then gazza scored a once in a lifetime goal. That would have made it two 1-1 draws against the goliaths of switzerland and scotland. Then we were very lucky that the dutch team were disintegrating when we played them. And spain had two perfectly fine goals disallowed unfairly.
