Holland and Russia

to be honest, i think germany will end up winning the whole thing.

Defeatism noted.

Also: third match, and three second-place teams progressing. Bye bye Spain? :D

How is Germany progressing a shock? They've been there a million times and know how to do it. Portugal always have had a bit of a soft underbelly. It's hardly a great surprise they lost.

Anyway, I think Spain winning would also be the shock.

Meanwhile, I missed this as I woke up for it and fell asleep again

Portugal's defeat is no surprise. I just found interesting that all teams that were already "sound favourites" based just on their first two of games (Portugal, Netherlands and Croatia) already went out, and the teams that had to break a sweat because they were on the verge of scandal (Germany and maybe Italy), needed a shock last match win (Russia) or played very appropriately like there was no tomorrow (Turkey) went through.

And Spain bottling another QF wouldn't surprise me, either - that happening, I think it would be the first competition in a long while where all semi-finalists had to wait for game three to advance from the group stage.

Surely tells a lot about "resting players", doesn't it?

It also says that teams shouldn't shoot their load in the group games. Strong comparisons between the Dutch this time and Argentina in 2006. I remember the whole of urban was virtually wanking in public after the Argies beat Serbia 6-1. I said that Germany would beat them in the qf. Few agreed with me...

I agree. You have a national team at your beck and call for only a few days per year and then you ask them to do their level best at a gruelling international tournament...there's a good case for keeping them together as long as possible, through dead rubbers, in order to gain the greatest advantage possible.

1st post on thread....

I know that some would call it a co-incidence but three of the teams who have made it to the Euro 2008 Semi-Finals i.e. Germany, Turkey and Russia didn't rest 5 or more players in their squad such as Croatia, Netherlands & Portugal -all out. Plus they were runners up in their respective groups as well.

So the Spaniards could be next team to go out. That's if they don't get it mentally & tactically spot on against Italy! ;)

As JTG mentioned about Zenit St Petersburg (the UEFA Cup winners & current Russian champions) the rise of Russian football over the last 6 years. With the Oligarchs investing a lot of money in certain clubs, in terms of developing talent in Russia's top division. Also CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup back in 2004 & 2005.

So Russia's emergence hasn't surprised me compared to some people since they were the youngest team in the tournament - average age 23 (i think?). After they were quite unlucky against Spain in their first group match, caused the Spanish defence quite a few problems despite the 4-1 score line. The team as a whole are improving match after match.

Potentially & imo Russia could develop into a more than decent out team. RD was spot on about the way the Netherlands went out spectacularly to Russia tonight. It was shades of Argentina in Germany 06, because of peaking too early & showing their hand (if you know what i mean) in the group stages. And Argentina paid the price after sitting back on a one goal lead in that match in Berlin.

Yet another great match

Even though i was hoping for the Oranjie to win this match. But i'll say well done and kudos to Russia for tactically and comprehensively outplaying the Dutch. Make no mistake they fully deserved one of their most famous wins in their history. What I liked about Russia is the response, spirit and attitude they showed in extra time. They had the belief they could get the result and it showed. It was great to see an underdog not surviving to get a result but outplaying the opposition.

Meanwhile I think Marco van Basten got his substitutions wrong as the Dutch urgently needed natural width in this game. The substitution of Dirk Kuyt for Robin van Persie was a major blunder by van Basten. Plus his other two substitutions Ibrahim Affelay - who was wasteful . Not forgetting Johnny Heintinga (who had been brought on to replace Khalid Bouhlarouz had an stinker of a match), didn't make an impact as in the previous group matches. In other words he panicked.

A certain Guus Hiddink quickly realised these changes & his Russian team took full advantage of the space vacated on the right hand side of midfield. Plus Yuri Zhirkov and Andrei Arshavin attacked at will at the Dutch defence. Another master-stroke from Hiddink as his team executed his plan to near perfection.

Just like the Sweden match they could & probably have won the match way before Ruud van Nistelrooy sneaked in unmarked with a diving header from Wes Snejider's quality free kick setpiece. Roman Pavyulchenko who opened the scoring with a another well worked goal put the underdogs in front. Another good game from him, but even though he goes get into great attacking positions. The big guy needs to be more clinical with the last four match on Thursday evening.

Zhirkov and Aleksandr Anyukov (probably imo the best left & right back pair in the tournament) were superb again. Arshavin display was outstanding in providing the Russians with creativity, leadership and skill. His inch superb cross and wing play for the second goal scored by the substitute Torbinsky, was class in a glass.

Then to top it off he does a nice drop of the shoulder to run on to the throw in to dash into the penalty area and shoot with a bit of deflection from Mathjsen to seal Russia's place in the Semi's. And judging by this great team performance either Spain or Italy cannot under-estimate or take this young team lightly.

And so it's the second upset of the tournament with Croatia going out to Turkiye on penalties. Well the Croats have got themselves to blame for not putting away 3 or 4 great scoring opportunities in the match. As already mentioned on the thread this compelling tournament is certainly wide open.

Germany are loads better than Portugal
Croatia are rubbish as well
Russia was a surprise, but Holland are rubbish 9 times out of 10

Germany or Italy to win, as always
Eh? Italy have only won it once, and Germany haven't won it since 96.

:D

So the 3 teams who had to field their strongest squads in their last group games are through to the semis:hmm:so much for resting players, lets see if Italy make it 4

Only seen it once before, years ago, when the referee changed his mind about giving Liverpool a penalty against Man U.Possibly after realising he wouldn't referee another big game for years.

Fair play to the referee on this occasion though, right decision in the end and it took balls of steel to admit he got it wrong.

i remember the ref changing his mind at anfield after gerard helpfully told him he had to send an opposition player off for giving a penalty away instead of just yellow carding him
