Historic defeat of Fianna Fail

I think if FG could have got together with a ragbag of half a dozen neo fascist independents they might have gone for it over a coalition with Labour, but it now looks like Labour's dream of joining the most vicious right wing government in Irish history is about to happen.

Nah because the blame for the austerity measures will lie solely with them, at least with Labour there there'll be more stability and the blame can be spread out. It's like turkeys voting for Christmas though it's the sort of government that being in opposition will be a good thing.

There's genuine hatred for FF in FG inner circles. It makes no sense for FG to help their old enemy, and it makes no political sense for an FF which has had this kind of electoral catastrophe to row in with their old enemy.

FF may be down and out now, but you can be sure they will attempt a comeback over the coming years.

From RTE

1320 Dún Laoghaire clarification: This morning the returning officer for Dún Laoghaire issued clarification of figures announced in the original count. This minor clarification resulted in a slight adjustment to the figures, but no change to the overall result up to that point, which was count nine and the exclusion of Labour's Ivana Bacik.

However, that corrected result is still subject to a recheck of Ivana Bacik, Sean Barrett and Richard Boyd Barrett's votes currently under way.

Until that process is complete, the exclusion of Ivana Bacik has not been officially confirmed, however it is expected that this will be confirmed once the recheck is complete.

More from RTE

1324 Labour has conceded that Ivana Bacik will not take a seat in Dun Laoghaire following talks with the returning officer who was rechecking votes.

Looking good for Boyd-Barrett

That reminds me, how did O'Cuiv do? Bet he hung on to his seat.
Elected in Galway West on the first count, but down 2000 votes from 2007. They even re-elected a PD there. What the fuck is wrong with them. Bleedin' culchies have us desthroyed.

Boyd Barrett's won it!

Just to explain - returning officer has confirmed that following the check of bundles all votes are correct and Labour has withdrawn the request for a full recount. They are now transferrring the FG candidates surplus which will take the other FG over, meaning two seats for them. Bacik will then be eliminated as she is 147 behind Boyd Barret, and her votes distributed between Boyd Barrett and FF's Hanifan. Hanifan is 560 ahead but there are over 7,000 Bacik votes to redistribute and even the FF tally counters confirm that Bacik's vote is going two to one in favour of Boyd Barrett and he will easily win the last seat.

Still might take a few hours to confirm all of that however ...

Good to see that cretin Mary Coughlan lose her seat ""It's been a very difficult day for all of my colleagues, many of whom have lost their seats," she said, playing the smallest violin in the World here I am :D

Yes, that is very good news. That woman is real plank.:D

Boyd Barrett beats Hanafin by well over 1,000 votes to the last seat. Bacik transfer was nearer 3-1 in favour of him. ULA now confirmed as five seats. Well done all those involved!

Great to see Boyd Barrett make it. It looked for a long time yesterday as if he wouldn't make it, but in the end his personal affability seems to have allowed him to win enough transfers from right wing candidates to hold off Bacik. Some of those votes are baffling in an ideological sense - first preference Fianna Fail, second preference communist - but the votes of the bewildered count just as much as anyone elses.

His campaign possibly made a mistake in their attitude to Labour, which was too soft in my view. If they'd gone in harder against Gilmore/Bacik on the doors, I think that there would have been enough of a gap between Richard and Ivana on first preference to avoid the two day soap opera.

Yes, almost certainly.

There will actually be some reluctance amongst Labour TDs, particularly the younger and newer batch, which could easily be mistaken by the unwary for slightly left wing sentiment. In fact it's a personal interest thing: The Labour leadership are elderly even by the standards of Irish politics. This is their last chance to be a Minister. The younger TDs won't be Ministers this time anyway, and a look at the economic situation and the fate of the Greens will tell them that in purely careerist terms, going into government puts their seats at risk. So we might actually see the first expression of "anti-coalition" sentiment in Labour for more than a decade. Not that they will be able to stop the overwhelmingly pro-coalition leadership and membership anyway.

Well it means he is, by the skin of his teeth, which is irrelevant btw, doing something you said he'd never do. :D

And I edited my post to reflect that a moment later when I saw the margin.

Have you ever heard of the concept of being magnanimous in victory, for fucks sake? :p:oops:

Tell you one thing they won't need to sell their next quota of the Socialist Worker, they'll be using them as jizz mops in SWP HQ.

Fairs Fair.

It was by no means a sure thing though in the end, at least give me that.
I didn't say it'd be a sure thing though. Quite the opposite once I realised it wasn't a 5 seater anymore.

me said:
Comrade Boyd-Barrett is likely to take a seat, probably at the expense of the Greens.

He's a sitting councillor and came very close in 2007. But I just noticed it'll only be a 4 seater this time so it'll be tighter than I thought..

Yes yes, either way seeing as Barrett costed Hanafin her seat I'll repeat the well done.
