Herne Hill news, chitter chatter and gossip

Been to the Birdhouse Brewery a few times now. Nice enough place, but beer range is quite small compared to Canopy. Also I think the Canopy beer was better. Good luck to them though, hope they do well. Nice place to sit for a beer when the sun is out.
Real shame canopy got priced out by the arch co.
It's definitely much nicer outside the arches now the car mechanics have gone though (also priced out). The crowd can spill up past makerspace without getting run over

Umana has had to ramp up the publicity campaign about the massive exchange boxes installed outside the shop.

Article in the daily mail today which I won't link to and djs and music there this weekend:

New shop just opened on Milkwood Rd where Seasons fruit and vegetable shop was.....it's a very upmarket deli operation selling similar produce to its neighbour, Dugard and daughters. I think Arches Wholefoods is the name.

Saw this. The usual suspects who dunk on the council for absolutely anything (I'm sure this is the fault of the LTNs, despite them being effectively self funding because of the cameras that are mostly there because those opposed insisted the filters all had to remain open to cars)

Anyway - I suspect a large part of the cost saving will come from not having to repeatedly mend the fences. Back in 90's/2000's I had friends on Brockwell Park Gardens and there was always through/over/under the fence or gate access at every park entrance. I can't imagine that has changed.

I wonder if that means the same will apply to Ruskin Park?

The path along the bottom of the park is very useful to those of us who live in Loughborough Junction & want to walk to and from Denmark Hill station. It's frustrating when it gets locked off in the evenings, especially in winter.

I think it is being applied to all parks. Or at least that is the plan.

Still the case along BPG - especially by the cricket pitch gate. Since the railings along Dulwich Road were reinstated it’s the only bit of the perimeter left with a waist-high wooden fence. I always come out that way if I get locked in on an evening run. The parkie usually leaves by the Norwood Lodge depot.

Good for cycling. There's some regular E-W routes I take that cut through the park which involve a lengthy detour via Trinity Rise or Brixton Water Lane when it's closed. Will be weird with no lighting though.

Ruskin Park actually has streetlights in it - but they haven't worked for years. I don't know the full history but I think they may date from the 80s/90s. I wonder what the locking-up policy was when they were put in. Assume it was the usual story with Lambeth that they weren't maintained and just fell into disrepair after a while.

Is there any petitions raised yet by the local residents to convey their concerns on whether a few gates are locked at night or not?

How is that the bottom of the park when it’s the northernmost part 😡

In any case, anyone knows that the correct orientation of a map of south london is with the thames at the bottom.
Says so here:

It's a shame they have chosen a west-biased crop for the map cover, disregarding the Thameslink line between Loughborough Junction and Farringdon as the capital's defining south/north central axis.

Wonder when this starts? I’d like to cycle through Ruskin Park tonight. Will report back.
Entrance on Finsen Rd was open. Exit I wanted wasn't

Road past Brockwell Park later and the Herne Hill and BWL entrances both seemed to be open, but by then I'd lost faith.
