Has Netanyahu over played his hand?

Melinda

Kama roa, efshar livloa?
Once the Republicans lost the election, I always assumed Bibi would count these as four lost years and hold out for 2012.

Humiliating Biden seems dangerously clumsy no?

I can't see their reasoning behind it all & it does seem to make a mockery of the peace process, even if development was planned long before JB's visit...

Depends which audience fat Benni is playing to.
IMO he's playing to the Republican right, as well as to the pro-Zionist Christian right, and the announcement was timed to send the message "we've got to talk to the Dems, but we still love you guys more".

Thereby laying the ground work for a mid term massacre.

Its just such a bold, bluff calling move. Obama is being assailed on all sides atm.

Yup. There'no votes going to be lost in Israel for his actions, and Fat Boy knows that the Democrats are too weak and divided on this issue to act against it - and they know that once the Republicans get in - its back to phospherous attacks on the A-rabs.

Having screwed over the whole of the Middle East to set up its bridgehead in the region, American capitalism is hardly like to withdraw support from its only major ally just because a few thousand Untermensch will be further dispossessed. Fuck, the Israelis have sent spies into America killed their civilians (Rachel Corrie) and even US troops (USS Liberty), so such trivial issues as respect for basic principles of justice or the well-being of others - are hardly going to be significant on American state policy (not unless they'll damage financial interests).

He must know that if Obama is willing to force them to comply and is able to muster enough of the American political establishment behind him then he'll have little choice but to go along with it. So might as well call his bluff. Although potentially alienating pro Israeli Democrats seems a little risky particularly with Obama's domestic problems.

Obama needs to play on the 'insult to America' angle I think. If he can portray this as some foreign country trying to boss America around he may free his hand a little. Unfortunately, in America, there's a whole host of factors like votes, Christian-right, political funding, that make it very hard for the US government to take a tough line with Israel.

He's also well aware there are Dems who'll in no way risk their campaign financing in the upcoming mid-terms by alienating the pro-Zionists (of whatever stripe) even mildly.
So yeah, new Repugs, same old bullshit.

When it comes down to it, the Wall Street agenda always comes first. USA Inc must continue to pull in the coin, regardless of the (non-American, naturally) human cost.

Precisely. In real terms the USA has been more of a block to the "peace process" in the last 40 years than a contributor, because it's a prisoner of those factors.

Yup, Ive come across Obama/ the administration being 'incandescent' a lot today.

Israel's US ambassador poured petrol on the row by going public- 'relations are at a historic 35 year low.'

Up till now the only sign of response was Biden turning up an hour late for an official reception.

Netanyahu has apparently said that he will not halt the building of the settlement.

The Israeli ambassador to the US has said that their relationship is at the worst point for years!

Israel seem to be in control, doing just whatever they want.

Some things never change.

Obama should go live on tele and tell them they're losing the billion dollars a year if they don't reverse their settlement policy...

Conversations Ive had with friends in Israel tonight have said Netanyahu has been scrambling to mitigate the damage, the news has been full of it. I think it all ran away from him.

Which chimes with an article I read in the Telegraph earlier today blaming not Bibi but the lunatic coalition partners for the timing of settelemtn annoucements and the fuck you-ness has which wrecked Biden's trip.

Easier to say than to do, given that the various non-repayable loans, agri-credits etc come form various departments of state.

Or perhaps fat Benni is taking advantage of having got into bed with assorted fanatical schmendricks to punch through shit that he might not get away with on a straight LIKUD ticket.
One thing fat Benni isn't, is shy about taking political advantage. He built his early political career on the death of his own brother, that's how much of a tukhes shtupper he is.

I don't think he has overplayed his hand. The Israeli government has always said 'fuck you' to any moves towards peace. It's considered impolite to do it while a US bigwig is in town but that's all it is - impoliteness. Apparently Netanyahu has launched an inquiry into how they made the mistake of...making the announcement at such a bad time.

Move on, nothing to see here. Someone just farted but the breeze will blow it away.

i can't help but draw similarities between contemptuous netanyahu and ariel sharon. owing to the murder of netanyahu's brother in 1976, i don't believe netanyahu will ever treat the peace process seriously or palestinians with empathy.

What ever happenned to Sharon? did he recover?

It seems to me that the Israelis will just continue to do what they do and nobody will have the balls to stop them.

eta: and the people who do have the balls don't have the weapons.

he is in coma since 2006.

i don't condone israeli policies, but i don't believe in the peace process (or the road map) either. it takes one look at the map of israel/palestine/occupied territories that one can't simply draw a border between israelis and palestinians as the colonial powers did in africa for instance. apologies for being cynical :(
