Government running out prison space?

this seems to be the first major issue for the new govt. perfect territory for the right-wing press to pile-in on Labour being soft as they let out prisoners. interesting to hear how it has deteriorated surprisingly quickly. wonder what the longer term solution will be.

Defining the whole of the UK as a prison

I’m not sure about that. I haven’t heard the Tories stick the knife in yet because it’s pretty obvious they left the justice system especially prisons, in a shocking state.

I was going to suggest Rwanda - the Fail reported Estonia...

There are just 651 spare places available in prisons across the whole of England and Wales, new figures reveal as ministers consider renting cells in Estonia

There’s some sense in Labour doing stuff like this as early as possible, get it out of the way during the ‘honeymoon period’ also a good time to bury bad news with the football likely to dominate the news over the next few days. Blunts the attack of the RW press a bit.

They have little choice. It was stated a while ago that the start of July was the point at which the system was likely to become completely overwhelmed. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a key part of Sunak's reasoning for calling the election in the first place.

Apparently less than 100 now

I've long believed Prisoners should be made to work unless disabilities prevent this, get them to build more prisons and fund the building from other profitable work they could be put to. I suppose someone will say that would violate their human rights or some other twaddle
Or that prison isnt about punishment

In context there are approx 95,000 prisoners

That could be a substantial workforce

Sometimes I wonder if Russ is an actual bot. But then I remember people actually are just that thick sometimes and can go their whole lives thinking the Daily Mail is talking common sense.
I sometimes wonder if you can think for yourself. I don't think I've ever read the Daily mail.

Quite apart from the complete waste and strain on the rest of society to have to pay for a Prisoners keep, do you imagine that the current way prisoners are dealt with in UK prisones (Locked up for most of the day) is rehabilitation?...of course not but I imagine getting them to do work is tantamount to slavery in your set like concrete view of the oppressed and the oppressors
Instilling a work ethic and building skills is a way forward, bonus you get some actual benefit to society as a whole.

But you don't want rehabilitation. As you note, what you want is to use them as a indentured labour force (which is basically the reverse of rehabilitation, instilling nothing but resentment and a sense of greivance). You have no vision for what happens when they come out. No sense of the difference between say, someone who steals bread and someone who murders - they're all just lumped in as people who apparently only twaddle peddlers would think deserve to have human rights. No view on the damage these prisons, which you want more of, do not just to the cons, but the guards, the families and loved ones of everyone involved. No perspective on the social damage this desocialising process does at great expense to the public purse. All you have is an asinine sense of smug superiority which, given your sneering, vicious attitude towards people you consider acceptable victims, has no basis in reality whatsoever. No ideas at all, in fact, beyond bUilD mORe PriSoNs.

How about you have a thought once in your life that isn't a tabloid reflection.
