'Go home' message on vans

Schmetterling

I saw something nasty in the woodshed!
I have searched the last five pages and cannot find a thread.

I am utterly aghast at this and it reminds me of the Nazi proganda - not bringing Godwin's law into this; it really does make me think of it. The Tories may like to pretend that its purpose is to persuade illegal immigrants to return to their homeland (fuck that; not even that: just leave/fuck off out of this country) but I think/we know the real purpose is to stoke more fear and hatred and inflate the 'problem' (in inverted commas as I do not think of it as a problem) in people's minds.

Hasn't Great Britain/England received a telling off from the EU already for it's use of language around, e.g., Romanians being entitled to come and live in this country.

This is Lynton Crosby's sort of thing. No doubt we'll see more of this crap before the next election.

Had read of him before but to refresh my mind

Wiki
Tactics[edit]

Crosby is described as favouring what is called a wedge strategy, whereby the party he advises introduces a divisive or controversial social issue into a campaign, aligning its own stance with the dissenting faction of its opponent party, with the goal of causing vitriolic debate inside the opposing party, defection of its supporters, and the legitimising of sentiment which had previously been considered inappropriate. This is also described as "below the radar" campaigning, with the targeting of marginal constituencies with highly localised campaigning, latching on to local issues and personalities.[1] To find such issues, Crosby's business partner Mark Textor runs focus groups to find which groups to target with what questions.[14] Crosby is said to run a tight ship, focus on simple messages, target marginal constituencies and use lots of polls.[3]

Though when I read the above linked-to article this morning - had first read about the plan to do this a few days ago - I did think 'Uh, oh; they may have shot themselves in their foot, here.' as it is just soooo extreme. I do have a hope that the sense of 'fair play' in this country will prevail.

ETA I also had day-dream visions of the vans being pelted with eggs and tomatoes. In faaaact, :hmm: , what would happen if people did that?

We used to refer to this as "poisoning the well". Mind you, Crosby's 2005 campaign for Michael Howard backfired spectacularly. :D

Can we find a better description than illegal immigrants as well, please?

Overstayers?

Why? It covers the all the bases of foreigners who are not supposed to be here. Overstayers are only those whose right to stay has expired
Immigration is a tough one we cannot let everyone in yet kicking people out whose only crime is not having the right paperwork seems cruel.

I don't think the comparison is unwarranted at all - it's what I thought of too. The other thing which made me think of the Nazi era was the attempt to turn state functionaries and private citizens into enformers / enforcers of government 'race policy' (for now read 'nationality policy'). They want landlords and teachers to interrogate people about their residence status. They want neighbours informing on neighbours. This was what the Nazis did with their Gauleiters and so on. We know the supposed 'neutrality' of the state is a fiction, but this kind of blatant co-option of state functionaries has some very ugly antecedents.
