Ghana is having elections in December. Apparently one contender has chosen a female running mate for the first time ever. However, my friend there tells me she is unlikely to vote because of the corruption and incompetence of both parties.

I don't really think it's my place to tell her who to vote for or not unless its obvious fash or something. I mean that's caused a lot of problems too hasnt it.

I was last in Ghana in 2011. The capital, Accra, reminded me of stories of Dublin in the early 1960s - still obvious poverty, but also an obvious building and construction boom, with new office blocks, apartment buildings and roads going up at breakneck speed.

Out on the coast, it felt more like Ireland in the 1930s. If I had gone into the interior, I suspect things would have been that bit poorer again.
