General aviation/airplane news and chat

14/15 - not sure what it wants for BD, they were British Midland, now some Cambodian effort. Also BD, US & CO no longer exist and AZ is a different airline with a different name.

eta, BMI - which they insisted wasn't an acronym for British Midland International :hmm:

And how anyone would know what U2 is is anyone's guess, they appear like that in my booking system but nowhere else.

I couldn’t remember who U2 was, but I have seen it used aplenty in the Airliners forums. But then again that’s populated exclusively by full-on aviation nerds.

I thought their only accepted answer for VS was not very sportsmanlike. I had got the airline right, which surely should be the main aim.

Should be, but had realised they’d want the full thing. An up to date version with 100 carriers by their known names would be fun. By fun I mean to me and possibly no one else on God’s earth.

Not strictly true, White Desert has been operating the slightly larger A340 from Cape Town to Antarctica for a number of years now.

Impressive all the same, and what White Desert offers, with options onward flights to the pole looks pretty good if you care not for money nor the environment…

I was just going to say I was sure I remembered reading about either an A330 or an A340 (same size different number of engines), having landed in Antarctica before.

I still don’t understand how the my don’t skid to fuck when touching down…

I have a long flight tomorrow night...24 hours and 3 minutes time...so I'm pressing refresh constantly on the BA site and I'm buggered if I'm paying 36 pounds to select a seat 🤬

Presumably that includes refuelling stops? I’m not expert but I’m sure I’m right in saying the longest single leg flight anywhere In the world is about 18 hours at most? Not that it makes your experience much more palatable I guess…

Doesn’t it refer to waiting for check in to open 24 hrs in advance to try and get the best available seat left?

I was on the dot at 24 hours before the flight, and I have a window seat towards the front of economy. I have "status" with most of the airlines I fly, so I'm not used to doping this.

sorry, I was unclear. I could only check-in 24 hours before the flight. The flight itself is only 11 hours. GIG-LHR for airport code afficianados.

Ah, got it. For what it’s worth, BA remains, for the time being at least, one of the flagship airlines that still lets you choose a seat for free. And even pick seats next to each other if you’re travelling with others.

Alas, not for my flight.
If you’re travelling solo it’s not a massive issue. Economy class is shit on any seat and the worst that’s going to happen is being given a middle seat. Which is undoubtedly shit, but I’d still have to inconvenience the passenger next to the aisle if I need to go to the toilet than giving the airline the satisfaction of taking a couple of extra tenners from me.

Still a cunt’s trick, though. There’s been talk of legislation being introduced (can’t remember if here or in the EU) to force airlines to publish final fare prices upfront, rather than the Ryanair-introduced trick of reeling people in with unrealistic fare prices only to have countless additional charges added on during the journey to the checkout window. Can’t wait for it to happen.

Flew in and out of here many times but never seen it from the front seat before.

I used to live in Howth so it was always nice seeing the house on the approach.

my cousin in portmarnock's house is, I'm guessing, a mile north of the flight path and you can lie in the upstairs back bedroom and watch the arrivals one after another. it's far enough away to avoid the noise but close enough to enjoy the show, every five minutes about.

BA without status just gives you a random seat with no ability to change at check in. To choose a seat means paying. I got the middle of an exit row on a recent trip on the way out then a window seat right at the back returning.

I have an entry that allows me to select seats for free on BA, but the booking must be made by me. Does take the piss that they charge for seats even in business class, except for the two highest fare levels, for a flight to LA you could pay £5140 and still have to shell out £300 to select a seat, which is just obscene.

Still better than Virgin's seating policy though.

This is about the most stupid thing Branson has done since Trevor Abbotts wife's bridal shop got in trouble...
DARPA looked at this over a decade ago...its a no no. People have eat. Came down in favour of growing in tanks using algae

Much of the ingredients of this crap was shipped over from the US
