Gaza under attack yet again.

I find this all so utterly bewildering. One country is killing another and there are people who find it justified. How? What power does Palestine have? At all? It's like watching the kid with the pea shooter fighting a soldier firing a rifle whilst clad in body armour. Then the soldier saying the peas hurt and all his mates saying yeah, that's why we have to kill him.

It's like some horrific version of the emperors new clothes. As if no one can see what's right there in front of them. Well, no one with the power to stop it.

Why isn't anyone stopping Israel? What happened to the USA defending the defenceless? It's heart breaking to watch Palestine try to defend themselves. They clearly have absolutely nothing to do so with.

What I find amazing is that Israel have managed to spin their actions so that it's not their fault at all, if only Hamas would stop then everything would be fine. Stop what? Farting over the wall? Dropping their pathetic fireworks on Israel?

Sickening.

thats never happened.

thats never happened.

And yet a lot if Americans would disagree. It's pretty much the same as how Israel's actions are spun. There's the plain truth and then there's the massive 'hearts and minds' campaign that we are supposed to swallow. It's like they can't be bothered any more, let's just put out some half arsed justification and if they don't like it then they're clearly subversive.

I think part of what's doing for hasbara is the fact that people can put themselves in the position of the Palestinians, especially with being able to talk to palestinians on Facebook and Twitter. They can imagine what it would be like to live in Gaza etc.

To be fair they do have a lot of work to do keeping up the belief that Israel is America's strongest ally, despite all the spying, the vast sums of money sent the way of Israel*, the utter lack of any real assistance in any war that the US has been involved in, the abuse when the Israeli government doesnt get its way (ie Kerry's treatment lately, Obama's treatment generally), the vast lobbying on the Capitol in favour of a foriegn power, the inevitable transfer of technology to third states (whether deliberately or accidentally) and the massive diplomatic complications that come from giving the Israelis a blank cheque to do whatever they want, to whomever they want.

* admittedly much of it is spent buying US military goods, but its still taxpayers / borrowed money in the first place

The USG is bought and paid for by the Israel lobby. Where's Europe?....the West?.....the East?.... Arab countries? Most of the world is indifferent to the plight of the Palestinians. I suppose trade/relations with Israel is seen as more important.

Eventually, all the Palestinians will be gone and Israelis will have replaced them. The reason they're not just moving in is because it wouldn't look good. But who cares? Who, in power, really cares? I mean if they did then they would be doing something. Clearly they don't so why not just bulldoze Gaza and get on with it. Or is that what we're seeing now?

Thats the problem; noone appears to care enough about the Palestinians, or even about the Israelis, to prevent what could easily happen over the next few weeks and months. It is perhaps worth quoting a former British Ambassador to Israel, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles (via this article by Oborne):

“I believe passionately that Israel on its present course is embarked on a pathway to assisted suicide. Suicide assisted by the Congress of the United States. The idea that the problem can be solved by walling up the Palestinians in the Middle Eastern equivalent of the Bantustans, which the South African government embarked on in the 1940s, is not only offensive morally, it is deeply out of keeping with everything we know of human history. It will not work, it cannot work, it should not work. And anyone who has a real affection for the Jewish people will want to help them to avoid this looming disaster.”

Why did nobody stop Germany? Why did nobody stop Rwanda? Genocidal monkeys will commit genocides it seems.

Yeah, true. It just seems like this is so blatant and prolonged. We were engaged with Germany in a war at the time, not that that justifies ignoring it. And Rwanda was like a firestorm. Again, not a good justification. But Palestine has been limping along for years.

That's the depressing truth, isn't it. And in a hundred years, no one but the historians will even remember. I wonder if natural selection is accelerating these horrific traits in humanity. Maybe in a hundred years no one will be left.

From that Oborne piece:

William Hague now believes that settlement construction will render [a two-state solution] completely impossible within two years at most.

Erm...
