One of the many legal games that the State of Israel plays is around its status as an occupier.
When it suits it - for an anodyne example, in denying Palestinians the votes in Israeli elections - it's the occupier.
When it suits it - for example in fighting off claims to apply the international law governing the treatment of people under occupation - it's not the occupier.
There is some legal entertainment value in the arguments its lawyers put while trying to have it both ways.
Gaza is, in law, whatever the State of Israel says, under occupation, even between military incursions, not least since Israel controls its borders.
When I was in Israel and Palestine, I saw the scrawny 18 year old conscripts patrolling in Jerusalam and at border check points, but also older soldiers on the border. Remember also IDF infantry units dont have career NCOs in the field only their engineering and signals units do.
Career NCOs in infantry units are usually based with HQ staff of units, unique to the IDF. Field NCOs who command fire teams and squads are usually conscripts.
The IDF is totally hyped.
