Fullers to exit the brewing industry.

Glad to see the Griffin Brewery will be preserved, I wonder how long for though. Doubt they'll be much change at the pubs except the choice of lager will change no doubt.

slightly related anecdote:
when I first moved to London in 1998 I was working shifts in Wandsworth Bridge Road, near the bridge end. one cold and rainy night I was waiting for the bus and hailed down the Fuller's horse cart (the one they use to deliver to local pubs), asking for a lift. they let me on and gave me a lift to Parson's Green.
they actually remembered me and gave me a lift quite a few times over the next couple of years.

That's awesome. I mean not only that they were delivering by horse and cart still in 1998, but that you got some free rides. Props.

don't know how long they actually delivered with horses, or what radius, but I used to see them regularly round there then. maybe they just did it for show? haven't been round there for ovr 15 years, so no idea if they are still out and about occasionally...

I do enjoy London Pride. As long as it doesn't interfere with the taste and availability, then in theory I'm OK with it. Though after what Kraft did to Cadbury I'm always suspicious of these things.
Spot on.
Now just a brand that will be produced wherever the (present) owners can see most economies of scale...bit like Youngs that passed to Charles Wells (Bedford) and then Marstons...
Making a nonsense of the distinctive quality of cask ales derived from their 'home' water.

I can confirm the horse & cart combo is still going strong, though possibly not the same horses. I think its more of a fun day thing now where they pitch up at Fullers pubs that are having an event or beer festivals.

Yes. Pride’s one of the finest mass produced beers in the country and ESB’s up there too. They were a good brewery although they did occasionally come out with some right stinkers.

never mind london pride, what about esb?

Not a lunchtime session drink. It makes people silly. In about 1980 two friends of mine decided to go over the wall of Buck House gardens to 'have a look around'. We'd been in a pub that you can't find if you're looking for it but then find when you give up. 'The Star'. We'd headed east through Belgravia and emerged on Grosvenor Place with Her Maj's garden wall facing us. I was 'look out' because of the state I was in. They reappeared sheepishly minutes later having been escorted off the premises. It must have been clear that they were pissed and a danger only to themselves.

The Lamb and Flag was another Fuller's pub that I frequented.

no indeed, if you're starting at lunchtime you want to begin with a pint or two of guinness before commencing the serious drinking

Youngs used to deliver by horse & cart around Wandsworth when I was at school in the 80's, massive great big horses they had. Shire/dray horses? Same thing??

This may come as a shock, but the old Ram brewery is now flats and Youngs got taken over by Charles Wells which in turn got bought out by Marstons (also own Courage).
Take heart, within a mile of the old Youngs brewery is Sambrooks Brewery; Wandle is a great pint.
We also now have the Wimbledon brewery also pretty good and the Bellevue Brewing Company in Clapham.

"i think Im turning Japanese...."

I drink lager, so don't really pay much attention to these things. Just remember the horses looked huge when I was little.

Mostly ex bankers/hedgies...still I suppose they've got to do something with all those bonuses?

Locally brewed ale as opposed to that cheap nasty fizzy stuff. Come brexit....

Um. Have you seen how much "locally brewed ale" there is in London at the moment? Walking around Bermondsey you're more likely to find a micro brewery then you are a tab shop.

If only Viz had done a Lager Cunts strip! ;)

Lager cunts being a given.

133 breweries in London now apparently.

I doubt fullers brewing will be moved to an industrial estate in Milton Keynes.

Eg ashai already own meantime which is still brewed in Greenwich.

May I respectfully suggest you get yourself down to the Hogs Back Brewery ( Tongham , I think) and try a pint of tea. It's quite drinkable.

Very aware of TEA, Hogs Back do all kinds are are forever having stalls in the High Street, they do a lager too, but it has a flavour so that’s no fucking good to me.
