utter shit.

Ridiculous claim.

If the intro to "20th century boy" doesn't quicken your pulse, you're probably already dead.

Now- the Police, Prefab Sprout, hard-Fi. There's shite for you.

Against that unsupported assertion I offer as evidence:

  • Go West
  • Wham!
  • Ultravox
  • A Flock of Seagulls
  • Adam Ant
  • Kajagoogoo
  • Men Without Hats
  • Power Station
  • Simple Minds
  • Spandau Ballet
  • Wang Chung

And that's just for starters. God, the 80s were shite.
No they were not - all the above (with the exception of Go West and The Power Station) produced some excellent records, some of them very influential on the music we're all listening to now

  • Dollar
  • John Foxx
  • Hall & Oates
  • JoBoxers
  • Kid Creole and his effing Coconuts
  • Thompson 'Twins'
  • The Style Council
  • Kool and the Gang
  • Haircut 100
  • All the ones on your list

Your move, cowboy.
John Foxx did some great stuff though a lot of it was poor and Kid Creole and Hall & Oates did some of the greatest music of the 80s, so you can stick your version of the 80s right up your arse

That's a quite obvious, blatant, bald-faced lie!

Shall I quote that bit again for you all? Just in case you all missed it? OK: here it is again.
Kid Creole and Hall & Oates did some of the greatest music of the 80s
You, sir, are utterly deranged.

I Can't Go For That, Maneater, Annie I'm Not Your Daddy, Stool Pigeon? You don't like those records? What's wrong with you? Are you a rock music fan who refuses to listen to anything funky? What in your opinion is the greatest music from the 80s?

Well. That's an overstatement but, basically... yeah. Like jazz and trad. blues (but unlike soul and reggae) funk just isn't a genre that appeals.

However, if I was going to spend any length of time listening to funk it would be George Clinton - not Hall & Bloody Oates!!!

I said funky, not funk.
and the 80s was truly funky.
It also spawned the best kinds of electronic music and we should be thankful.

Funky, adj. From funk, noun. Allegedly.

OK, I'll come clean and grant you that the 80s wasn't all shite. Many, many exciting things happened in the world of rock. However, for me, the 80s is the decade where people stopped taking pop music seriously; the point where its currency became devalued. For every Pet Shop Boys, it produced 2 Wham!s, and for every - Christ, I'm struggling here - Madonna there were 2 Kajagoogoos (who once made a decent record, you say?).

Howard Jones and Haircut 100 are not what we fought the punk wars for.

Mmmm, I forgot about the early house stuff, 'Too Far Gone' by Adonis for example, which is a fantastic tune which I still play out on.

I'll widen my list to include:

10. Solar Radio (especially the DMC show they had)
11. LWR
12. Kiss (before it became legal!)
13. Les Adams (forgetting the records he released he was a superb DJ with great ear and sense of drama)
14. Electro Funk and Hip Hop
15. The 'Rare Groove' scene (which was a great place to be to escape all the Acid stuff that I couldn't stand)
16. Early Todd Terry (AKA Black Riot, Orange Lemon, Todd Terry Project, Swan Lake)

BB:)

Arcade Fire mystifies me.

I just don't get it.

Mind you, I've never been a fan of The Waterboys either.

Arcade Fire are definitely not shite. And i hope your not suggesting The Waterboys should be on this list

*cough* no way back by adonis do you mean?

Of course.
Waterboys - should be tried for crimes against music.
And simultaneously awarded for making some of the greatest, most spine-chilling songs ever committed to tape. Truly a band of highs and lows (with the highs ever fewer and the lows ever lower the longer they went on).

Ooooh yep, got me on that one.Brain wasn't working.Otherwise I'll be talking about Two Puerto Ricans, a Dominican and a Blackman.

BB:oops: ;)

I refuse to let anyone slur the name of Men Without Hats! Safety Dance!

Also Radiohead, for all their latter tedium and pomposity, at least did The Bends which was good.

Waterboys? They did a good song I think. I even like a couple of the Thompson Twins hits. But then I have no pride when it comes to music.
