Foodbanks

''make sure it is genuine''

How depressing. Heave forfend someone who is not hungry enough should turn up on spec.
Being there ought to be enough!
And you can only go to a Trussel trust once in 3 months? For all that foodbank attendance has trebled or whatever there is more demand than supply by the sounds of things.
They has got to be more the state could do? All that talk of mothers going hungry to feed there kids. 21st century lol

Of course there is more the state could do. They don't want to. They want this, exactly this. They are the drivers.

Where DSS staff used to be tasked with helping claimants get the benefits they are due now their job is to deny them their due and send them to the big society.

<snip>

I don't believe Tressell Trust has anything to do with combating poverty - it uses all volunteers (no pay) apart from one or a few depending on size managers who control things at that Bank. They receive wages naturally and can control people under them, as can be expected.

Here's the strange thing about your post.

Part of me thinks that food banks should exist on volunteer work, thus lowering the overhead and allowing more food to go into the bank.

Another part thinks that people should be paid, they are working.

As I posted earlier, Smith released money for the Tressell Trust two years ago

btw, a friend of a friend who on being made redundant with no backpay, etc was given just 3 pounds a day emergency loan by the DWP and that was it, others are just being referred to the F/B's

Who cares what you think, here in the U.k food banks are an insult and a travesty and have no place in a decent welfare system.

Christians definitely seem to have cornered the market in food banks.

There seem to be two main organisations running food banks near me - Trussel Trust that operates on a voucher system and you can only go once in 3 months, and the Matthew Tree project which I don't know so much about.

Matthew Tree seem to let people choose what food they want rather than providing parcels, but I'm not sure if people can refer themselves.

One of our religious denominations has cornered the market on helping the poor in our town, as well.

Not only do they run the food bank, they also run the thrift clothing store, the used furniture and appliance outlet, and the weekly soup kitchen.

Foodbanks are bollox though - They're no answer. If you can't put your electric & gas on how're you going to boil your pasta?

And what about toiletries? Sanitary protection for women? Nappies? Perishable things like fruit, milk, bread? People in poverty don't need 3 days' worth of dried and tinned food once every 3 months, they need fucking money.

You can't afford the welfare system you dream about. Food banks, or neighbour helping neighbour, is here to stay.

It's YOU how attaching the stigma to people who use them. Not all people using them are on benefit, ya know.

Right now, you sound like an American. Sesame Street attempted to dispel the image of food banks and all the nice, middle class Americans erupted. "How dare you show poor people" or some such nonsense. Go google if you want more info, I've given you enough info.

Grow up and accept that the government is not responsible for your life - you are. And, if the shit hits the fan, I hope you live in a community that will support you.

They have those products at our banks. When they get low on the nappies, they issue a public plea.

I think the idea behind the food banks it to supplement the groceries, not be the sole supplier. Ideally, you should be able to get staples, and have some money reserved for the perishables. Ideally.

That's bullshit for a start.

Yes we can afford it, the govt don't want to. And the government are responsible for our welfare. Taking care of our welfare is exactly what we pay them for.

And that's acceptable? In a " first world country"? In this day and age? I mean come on.
