Ahh - The Crispy Pancake. First food I was allowed to cook on my own.

And yes, I too remember the cheese and ham filling - from back in the 70s. I doubt I've eaten any since 1980.

I also remember one of the stores had a cheaper look-alike product that was utter crap.

The cheese and ham ones were nice, but CHICKEN AND MUSHROOM was BY FAR the best filling!!! :(

They're all wrong now anyway - the outside just goes *burny* instead of golden and is all wrong, texture wise.

*sulks*

Chicken and mushroom, chicken and bacon and steak and kidney....(late 80's - I had them first early 80's but can't find any earlier ads - pretty sure though that they did chicken and mushroom, minced beef and the cheese and ham/cheese :hmm: ones to begin with).

Last aisle from door. If walking down towards till, they're halfway down on left. Not in chest freezer bit, in the bit above with door.

I looked and asked and all they had were some fake "green valley" ones or something like that and they looked even crappier than they Findus ones to be fair.
They also only did them in bacon and sweetcorn flavour and sweetcorn in evil.
I did see these ones where you described though.

While looking for a recipe for these, I found this raw vegan version:

Pancakes

1) Grind the flax seeds to a flour. I use a Vita-Prep3 with the dry jug, and you can also use a seed or clean coffee grinder.

2) Blend all the pancake ingredients in a high-speed blender with a normal jug and blend untie you have a batter.

3) Line your dehydrator with non-stick sheets. For an Excalibur, you’ll need two trays.

4) Pour four circles (two on each tray) of batter, using all the mixture and spread them until they’re about 7-8″ wide.

Coating

1) Grind the flax seeds to a flour as above. Place them in a bowl and hand mix all the other coating ingredients.

2) Add this to a sieve and tap the sieve over the pancakes until each one is coated evenly.

3) Dehydrate the coated pancakes at 115°F/46°C for about three hours.

Filling

1) Cut the mushrooms into thin strips and add to a wide bottomed bowl.

2) Add the oils and tamari and mix well. Leave to marinate until your pancakes are nearly ready to flip.

3) Very finely dice the celery and add this and the salba/chia to the marinated mushrooms.

4) Blend the remaining filling ingredients in a high-speed blender to make a cheeze. Add this to the mushrooms and mix well.

To Assemble

1) After your pancakes have been dehydrating for three hours, you can flip them by laying an unlined tray on top of them and turning the whole lot over, then peeling the non-stick coating off.

2) Do this to all your pancakes, then add even amounts of filling to one side of each pancake. with your finger, use some of the moisture of the filling to wet the edges of the pancakes so they stick when folded.

3) Fold each pancake in half and press the edges together. Dehydrate for 2 more hours before serving.

Man, talk about food porn. This recipe just gets me salivating from the first instruction, "Grind the flax seeds to a flour".

Ooooh yes, chicken and mushroom of course!! Now I remember. Yummy!
And the mince ones.
Never liked the cheesy ones as they were too sickly.

Having said this, I only ever had them at other peoples houses as mum wouldn't cook them.
Maybe that's why they seem special in my child's mind :)

The mince ones with chips and beans were a family fave for us in the early to mid 80's. If you tucked in too quickly, the filling would sometimes burn your mouth a little bit. The last time I spotted them were in a mates fridge quite a few years ago. I think he was saving them for a special occasion - or so he claimed :D

For a double delight, we had a couple of times Crispy Pancakes with Bird's Eye potato waffles (waffly versatile!). Yum!

The addition of sweetcorn to the cheese and bacon ones has saddened me immensely. I used to like a sandwich with one c&b one minced beef. It was like having say a burger that was half Bacon Double Cheese half Chicken Royale. The ultimate in the arsenal of the 'stoner who appreciates variety's munch closet. Alas. They, like glastonbury, pot noodles and the east coast of Japan, are not as good as they used to be :(

I love a crispy pancake, or as a mate of mine used to call them Cripsy pancakes, making them hardcore LA gangsta.

Srsly tho, fantastic food.
