FIFA Men's World Cup 2034 to be hosted in Saudi

They've already hosted a major women's tennis tournament. Issue there of both women doing stuff in public with heads and legs showing and the number of openly gay female tennis players. But it still happened. The players themselves are kept in a bubble, special rules apply. Bit like making the West Indian rebel cricketers 'honorary whites' in apartheid South Africa.

They're throwing so much money at sport atm that nobody is saying no. :(

Confirmed today.

From the Guardian

Fifa has set the seal on one of the most controversial decisions in its tumultuous history by confirming that Saudi Arabia will host the 2034 World Cup.

In a decision that Amnesty International has said “will put many lives at risk” and which has drawn opprobrium from NGOs, trade unions and legal and governance experts, as well as supporters, the Gulf state will stage the 48-team tournament in 15 stadiums across five cities, most likely in winter.

The news has been anticipated for more than a year, since Fifa expedited its bidding process leaving Saudi as the sole bidder for 2034. It was confirmed on Wednesday in a bizarre virtual congress of Fifa’s 211 members, a meeting plagued by technical difficulties and with its key decisions taken not by vote but by acclamation, a collective clapping of hands on a wall of video screens.

Also confirmed was the destination of the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with three “centenary celebration matches” in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay to launch the tournament.

The president of Fifa, Gianni Infantino, said that the process of deciding hosts without a vote had “shown unity” in the football community. “In a divided world you have shown unity, you have shown that we are part of a global community,” he said. “We are not all equal, we know that, but we are learning to live with our differences and to respect each other.

I suppose it would have been a bit much to hope for the FA to dissent, two days after Starmer was in Saudi closing deals for BAE.

That I found weird too...
It’s because of the fix for the previous two. As they’re both multicontinental, Europe, both Americas and Africa were ruled out. Leaving Oceania and Asia. Didn’t take much bribery for no other Asian nation to nominate themselves, so…

It was always on the cards. Sadly the deed is now done.
editor 2 threads for merging ( it's not just about the world cup, footie alone, it's so much more than that ).

The one before this has changed from Spain, Portugal and Morocco to also include a match in Uruguay, Argentina & Paraguay. This rules out South America. 😕

It was then left with Asia and Oceania, the joint Australia and New Zealand bid pulled out for the obvious.

Glad that I don’t like soccer ball.
I used to like it.

It's not limited to football. MBS's ambitions are sky-high, and he's already got golf, snooker and I think F1.
I think the Saudis or one of the states has got a basketball team in the Euro League next year? They will have a football team in the CL, Europa League or Conference league within three years I think.

They’re buying the basketball league, rather than sneaking a team into it, I believe.

The proposed stadia do look fucking amazing, from an architectural POV. It's of course tragic the cost of our minds being blown by these marvels will have. It's fucking disgusting actually.

Obvs, NZ and Australia wouldn't have been able to compete on stadia. But they were given 6 weeks notice to bid I think I heard? Which is obvs impossible. But from a human rights perspective I think I know where I'd prefer it went. And because of FIFA's arcane rules, NZ and Aus were the only possible competitors to the middle east.

Just gross.

They're gettin into cricket too

In this programme, they stated that they are buying into all sports ie sportwashing. Trying to exert their influence over everything and/or gain greater acceptance throughout the world. As for UK footie they already Newcastle in their pockets.

What a load of old bollocks
FA defends decision to back Saudi World Cup bid - Saudi 2034 World Cup: FA chair Debbie Hewitt says it 'wasn't a difficult decision' to back bid

Amongst other things to highlight....
"The FA has come under pressure to explain how its support of the LGBTQ+ community through the Rainbow Laces campaign is consistent with its backing of a tournament in a country where homosexuality is illegal, and why it failed to abstain from Wednesday's acclamation, like Norway did."

It won't make a bit of difference, but if I'm still around they won't have my support. I'll not watch it.
