Fatalities and critical injuries at Asake concert crush at the Brixton Academy

RUBBISH.

Why is it not that simple? Maybe it doesn't make sense to you because you can't understand some simple cultural difference.
You've all answered the question without even realising - all admitting that the doors were run by shady doorman for decades and this never happened before - and his wasn't the issue here. The crowd were exclusively a single race - they "rushed" the door in an organised attempt to get in without paying and one black woman lamped a copper round the face (all on video, I've seen it) then accusing them of using excessive force. This is the same tactic they use when "rushing" Westfield or any other shopping centre, it's a well known "tactic" that is used in America and you can watch videos online - they do it in Detroit, Miami, NY - most recently at the Apple stores, hence the extra security you see over here - due to the copy cat criminal elements (again all on video). So yes, collectively you can refer to "the crowd" as people act in unison when grouped as a collective with a shared identity. This is why crowd dynamics are totally different from individuals actions and in this case - it's known that it was premeditated and organised online to enter without paying. No amount of security, good or bad, could have prevented this and the worst bit - we will all suffer the extra cost for future events and extra Policing and security will be part of their licence conditions. Why do we all have metal detectors at the major clubs (like Ministry of Sound, Fabric) It's not White people going around with machetes and knives around London, storming shopping malls and if it was evidence could be provided that there were no cultural consistencies at play here - but that's impossible and people need to accept it instead of over intellectualising the problem.

It probably took longer to type this drivel that they were a member of urban for.

That’s got to be of note surely?

I assume this is ultimately the venue’s responsibility to get right?

Fabric, which is 1/3 of the size, has 2 paramedics on duty at all times. That venue does however have a long history of ecstasy overdoses/deaths and lots of authority pressure because of it.

You wonder if venues take much consideration over medical staff covering 100's of people storming the venue and causing a stampede, as it is so rare.

Conditions from the licence included in the committee papers:

6 A fully equipped first aid point staffed by adequate numbers of first aiders shall be maintained for the duration of the event Drinks and refreshments shall only be supplied in plastic or paper containers.

24 A risk assessment for the premises shall be carried (this to be reviewed as and when new hazards are introduced into the premises), all significant hazards identified should be recorded and remedial measures/systems put in place

Who defines 'adequate'? presumably there ought to be some form of risk assessment/matrix that the operators rely on, factoring in the type of event and profile of the crowd. The risk assessment mentioned above seems to suggest physical hazards to my reading.

Knowledge of the event/crowd is key, a dance event where the use of ecstasy (as mentioned above) would be anticipated should indicate the need for qualified paramedics. The Academy did have at least one ecstasy related death some time ago, but I don't think this event would fall into that category.

They had assessed the event as "high risk [level5}. Mentioned in this article

Wow - reads like an after report.

What exactly does "up to 200+" mean?
Sounds like they correctly called that it was a potentially troublesome event and needed as many security, including fast response, as possible.

There are of course whispers they failed to achieve that.

At risk of going completely off topic.
  • Although an annoyance, "up to 50% off " means savings of between 0% and 50% (49.9% anyway), whereas
  • "up to 200+" is meaningless, being perfectly good individual words turned meaningless by of the order in which they are combined . As has already been pointed out

It says in the article that another operator will probably take it on in the (likely) event that AMG lose their licence permanently.

I hope so and I hope they do a better job for the punters and staff.
The extended closure is having a terrible knock-on effect for local businesses who rely on the huge crowds coming into the area....

*but obviously the place should remain closed if the operators can't guarantee people's safety

The Academy had some beefy legal representation at the first Licensing hearing. They offered voluntary closure for a period of three months, rather than be told by Lambeth that they had to close. It was a subtle argument - being the good guys, rather than having it on their record that the Met recommended closure.

Have to say this latest development is quite a surprise.
