Fatalities and critical injuries at Asake concert crush at the Brixton Academy

I know what economics is

But I also know if we actually care about a service we can override it

If something is essential it shouldn't be a commodity

Being essential means you should be able to have it

Coffee and alcohol are not essential and so it's price is not an apple's to apples comparison

Being angry about the state of housing is justifiable and to most people appropriate.

I'm saying that as someone from a family who has/had landlords in it.

It was clear it was open again last night as there were both touts and middle aged men awaiting for the gig outside the Tube at 7pm

I've replied here ======> The housing crisis (London and beyond)

So yesterday's event - and the one next week - will run at 50 per cent capacity, with a new security firm installed.

In the same way that for many years Oscar Pistorius didn't kill anyone.

Really...?

So you’re saying the Academy has always been a loaded and cocked gun, that it’s an inherently dangerous place with baked in potential for death and mayhem. That the Academy has been masking it’s devilish tendencies, disguising it’s deeper malevolence under the pretence of being at the top of its class. That those of us who love the place are under a delusion, that our relationship with the venue is toxic and predatory.

Is this the case for all venues?

Or is it #notallvenues?

Fucksake, have a word.

The File on Four programme alleges that the security guards were taking bribes. I can't find a police report or the promised SIA investigation that might refute that.

People dying at a venue is clear evidence that things weren't being run well. There has to be some accountability. It's not just 'one of those things'.

That's exactly the point. It was not the venue. The venue itself is not inherently unsafe. The security firm were running a racket, possibly with the collusion of someone else in the building but probably not. Venue management may have been negligent in not scrutinising the security more rigorously but nothing suggests they were complicit.

The venue itself is not the issue. The security firm was the issue.

I'd love to believe you, but I can't see any report from the police or SIA or anyone else exonerating the management.

Went off without incident hundreds of times a year for many years, so this isn't surprising.
Bloody hell, just noticed this. Nivana UK selected to re-open the Academy as it was 30 years to the day since Nivana was due to play the Academy in 1994 - but had to cancel due to Kurt Cobain's suicide earlier in the month.
I was only interested in lithium (as a user) but curious that the song "Lithium" does not mention the word - and indeed Kurt Cobain maybe should have been taking it, in which case the posthumous tribute could have been a live performance.

Went last night, Janelle Monae was as brilliant as ever and the crowd were fantastic.
Loads of stewards.
To get in we were directed to walk past to academy up Stockwell road (on the opposite side to the academy) then round the corner to Stockwell Park Walk and then finally into Astoria Walk. The only issue with this was the crowds having to cross Stockwell Road. 😳
Tickets on phone only, 1 ticket per phone per person.(If you don't use s smartphone, you're fucked). Mr SB's ticket wasn't loading, but a very nice steward help him and all good.
Searching was glance in the handbag and wave over with a wand and that was it.
It looked like bar staff were topping up water bottles that people had brought in (empty). Not seen that before.
Being old gits, we opted for upstairs and were shown to our seats. Stewards making sure people got the the right ones and stayed there, not sitting in the aisles.
Couldn't see what downstairs was like, but I imagine much less rammed. Upstairs was full.
Once the gig started everyone stood up. People were in the aisles a little but not blocking them.
We left seconds before the end and the exit was awash with stewards and also outside, keeping people (waiting parents?) away from the exit.
Couldn't see that any changes had been made to the foyer/doors.
It's really nice to have the Academy back, I've missed it.😍

Exiting of the venue from Stalls (ground) level is much more pleasant with the doors opening into Astroria Walk last time I was there. Reduces the risk of a crush via the bar and foyer door pinch points.
