Fat White Family & various offshoot bands (Moonlandingz, Insecure Men, Warmduscher, Pregoblin etc)

well that sounds very mysterious.

Pardon me and allow me to rephrase. All I was saying was the very trivial observation that musical taste is subjective. So what you or AS see as "the essence" of FWF is subjective to you. I see and hear something qualitatively different - a fairly bog-standard, been-done-to-death thing. Neither of us are right or wrong in any objective sense.

Personally, I can grow to love slightly off-the-beat stuff like that, but only once I've got to know a band's music properly iykwim. Until I've grown to know their style my frontal cortex is constantly prodding me and saying "he missed it again, he missed it!" :D
You know, sometimes "missing it" is what it's all about.

There is no right or wrong as regards essence. Just degrees of separation.

It can be, yes. Hence the bit in between the first two commas. But if you're not familiar with a band's style and what they're trying to do then it can sound suspiciously like a crap drummer...

They are discomforting in so many different little ways. That's one of the reasons I like 'em, and why I rate them. They're unsettling. They rub people up the wrong way. They are spiky and odd, without being outre or avante garde. It's good to be shifted sideways out of our comfort zone from time to time.

the bands i'd be comparing them too are... stooges, the fall, cramps, country teasers, 13th floor elevators, the monks, velvet underground (white light white heat, not loaded)

Are you talking musically? If so, I've gotta disagree. Even a causal acquiantance with any noisy indy band of the last 30 years lets one comfortably place this band in with fellow musical travellers IMO.

Nicely put.

I'm undecided, but I think with bands like that anyone who *loves* them on the first couple of hearings would be lying anyway tbh.

Don't know the Monks, but I can't for the life of me hear any 13th Floor in there. Anyhoo.

Oh get off, they're a country teasers fall rip off having a laugh. They're unsettling no one.

That "essence" you speak of is solely in the eye of the beholder tho. For me their "essence" is clearly other than what ruts and perhaps you see.
Yes it is. This is music. The beholder was Rutabowa and that was his opinion. Do you think his opinion is wrong? Watch the video. Did you like it? If not do you like any of their music?

Yes, I think his opinion is wrong inasmuch as I don't share it. I watched the video, it was, as I said above, decent but no more. That about sums them up for me - decent. Not particularly bad, not particularly good. Certainly not great. OTOH I'm happy for you if you love them. As long as excuses for shit behaviour aren't made.

i can honestly say i put off listening to the album for a while when they first put it on line because i had the feeling it was going to be a bit shit and i'd feel awkward about being nice about it, but when i finally heard it i instantly thought it was ace and was all relieved.... this was back in 2012...

I thought he said that if you don't like that video you won't need to bother looking any further. Sounds like you agree with that to me. You don't see anything special about it, and you didn't get anything more out of anything else you have heard or seen.

Music is of course subjective, and Rutabowa obviously likes the fat whites, but that's not what he was getting at. You actually agree with him but are somehow turning it into a weird argument about something else.

yes that was exactly what i meant.
i'm not trying to convince anyone to like anything. that would be silly.
